Nariman Point is about to get a lot cooler. Starting tomorrow, popular restaurant The Sassy Spoon will host live music performances as part of Friday Live@Sassy Spoon. And kicking off the series with her signature Carnatic-infused jazz sounds is Aditi Ramesh, who will take the stage with musician Nathan Patra.

While several venues have been welcoming indie singers of late, most are concentrated in the western suburbs. So, it’s a pleasant surprise to see a prominent SoBo eatery take this approach. Explaining the reason for this, Rachel Goenka, founder and CEO of The Chocolate Spoon Company, says, "The city is full of incredibly talented artistes and we wanted to give them a venue to showcase their talents. When we were working on the new avatar for the Nariman Point outpost of The Sassy Spoon, we wanted to ensure that the venue lent itself to live performances. We’d like to be recognised as a venue that supports upcoming
talent."

Tomorrow, Ramesh and Patra will play a mix of oldies and contemporary tracks for the audience. "Nathan and I don’t get to perform together very often, but we try to come together every once in a while," says Ramesh, adding, "This time around, we’re playing tracks like Why Don’t You Do Right by Peggy Lee, and Cruisin’ by D’Angelo. I’ll also be singing a few originals from my
new EP."

The 27-year-old is excited about the EP, titled Autocorrect, which will launch within two weeks. Three of the four tracks are already out, and give listeners the full spectrum of what she can achieve with her voice. "I like mixing genres. Efflux of Time, the opening track, features a lot of looping. Marriageable Age, meanwhile, features rapper Dee MC and ventures into hip-hop."

The final tune, Small Fish In A Big Pond, is all about jazz-Carnatic fusion. "The track has been ready for a month, but I’m waiting for a violinist friend to record some bits for it," she says.

Goenka herself is a huge fan of live music, and shares that the curation and programming will take place in-house and be overseen by her. "We’re looking to have a lot of talented local musicians perform at the restaurant, with acoustic and unplugged sets and music across genres like jazz, blues, pop and soft rock. Each set will be unique in its own respect and will include a mix of covers and originals by the artist," she says.

Post this gig, you can look forward to performances by Reuel Benedict and Naquita D’Souza on November 3, and Raghav Meattle on November 10.
