The Mumbai debut of Sunset Cinema Club is based on what sounds like a dreamy start in New Delhi back in 2016. It was early winter in Delhi, and audience had gathered at the pink sandstone amphitheatre of Akshara Theatre, an arts complex, to watch Pulp Fiction. “We wanted to give Delhi an open air theatre experience,” says Sanchit Gupta, who hit a brainwave of initiating Sunset Cinema Club along with Sahil Kapoor.

On February 2, Sunset Cinema Club will travel to The Barking Deer for a cinema experience different from the New Delhi one. The brewpub and restaurant will whisk away its tables and chairs, and bring in row seating suitable for a movie experience. The Barking Deer’s founder, Gregory Kroitzsh says that a curtained area — very much in the way of Broadway theatre — will be made, sectioning the pub into a viewing area apart from the bar. There won’t be bar staff taking your orders and instead, self-service at the bar will be the order of the day.

The first movie on Sunset Cinema Club’s Mumbai menu is Pulp Fiction. “We see a lot of interest in old films these days. Besides, my friends and I are big fans of Pulp Fiction ourselves,” says Gupta. More importantly, Gupta and co-founder Kapoor, both 29, are keen on curating thematic experiences around cinema. “There is a dearth of these experiences in India where people can come together as communities to watch a film. Here you get to meet likeminded people,” says Gupta.

Sunset Cinema Club could prove to be an ideal date night (February 14 will see a love edition at The Barking Deer), a get-together for fans (we hear that Star Wars is in the works) or just a good ol’ round of beer with the bunch. But, the best bit is that the Sunset Cinema Club is planning a screening on the beach. Imagine — a starry night, the sound of waves and a cult classic, all in one.
