Automated Fingerprints and Palm Identification Systems received, but not to be used near Games venues

Everyone has been pointing fingers at the preparedness or the lack of it of the Delhi police as far as security for the Commonwealth Games is concerned. But now after long efforts the cops have some technology to support them. Delhi police has received a bunch of Automated Fingerprints and Palm Identification Systems (AFPIS).

Fine print:
Biometric systems like the one above will be used by the
Delhi police at courts and special police stations.

The police have created an integrated system to identify criminals for easy proceedings of cases and to prevent crime.

"We have received the delivery of the AFPPIS and the machines are being tested. The officials are being trained for the functioning of the machines and the integrated system is being installed. As soon the process completes the machines will be deployed on 24 locations in different areas of Delhi," said a police officer.

The catch is that the systems were supposed to be part of the whole Games security set-up.u00a0 But now the systems are supposed to be installed at courts and offices of special police like crime branch and special cell.

According to police officials it is more important to use the machines in such areas as compared to Games venues. The officers also claimed it as a milestone in the modernisation of Delhi police. "Such systems are milestones in the history of Delhi police.

These equipments will make us stronger and faster," said a senior police officer. The Delhi police has got only 15 days for dry runs at the CWG venues. And if another deadline is missed the security agencies will be in big trouble. Sources in the Delhi police said that top officials are in a tizzy as skipped deadlines mean less time for their preparations for CWG.

POLICING THE GAMES
Recently the Central Police Control Room was expanded and upgraded. The Automatic Vehicle Tracking System which presently covers 400 vehicles is being expanded to cover all 630 PCR vans (including those under procurement) and 121 PCR motorcycles. A proposal to cover the entire Traffic fleet of 700 vehicles with a GPS - based Vehicle Tracking System is at an advanced implementation stage. A state-of-the-art Cyber Highway and the Intelligent Traffic System Projects are underway. Delhi Police is establishing an Integrated
Communication Network (Cyber Highway) to be used for convergent services, through Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) on their latest MPLS VPN Network. The Communication Unit has also undertaken installation and commissioning of Integrated Voice & Data Communication and Recording System (IVDCRS) to upgrade District and Unit Control Room operations of Delhi Police. All these deployments costs a lot of money but they are yet to be tested.
