With a new app, the city's strays find food, shelter and love

Tinder for animal lovers

Let’s say you caught up with your friend, who is not particularly fond of animals, at a café in her neighbourhood. Right outside the café is a stray cat and her litter of kittens. Your heart melts at the sight of them; your friend cringes. Will she feed the feline vagabonds every morning? Not likely. And you live too far away to make the trip.

Fret not, because help is at hand. A new free Android app called Stray Globe, which aims to connect strays with animal lovers who can potentially help them with food, first aid, sterilisation, or, if they are feeling like it, a home. Developed by Tomer Romano-Cohen and Segev Cohen, based in Israel, the app launched in India on May 1, with an iOS version to be launched soon.

When we log on to Stray Globe, we hope for a flurry of reports on the number of strays around us, but that wasn’t the case. There were about 15 overall sightings, a number that belies the vast population of homeless cats and dogs in the city. While the app awaits more users to sign up, the notes on each stray are detailed as far as the condition of the stray is concerned. Is it a lost pet? Is it famished?

The app is pretty straightforward in its potential; it lets you mark cats and dogs, the most common strays, and an “else” catgeory. However, if you do happen to bump into the odd injured owl, perhaps animal rescue services, rather than Stray Globe, will be your go-to option. What’s more, the app also helps you track the progress of strays that you have marked.

We found the app underused, and that’s a shame, really. We hear that the founders also want users to get notifications, much like social media, every time a user marks a new stray in their area.
