Tiwary declares: I'm ready for Test cricket

Manoj Tiwary's 93 against England in the first warm-up tie at the Brabourne Stadium yesterday offered the selectors yet another middle-order option for the Test series against the Englishmen

Tiwary impressed with his attacking strokeplay as India ‘A’ piled up 369-9 on Day One. He has been a fringe player for Team India for quite some time now and it would not have been easy for him to sit on the sidelines and watch others play even as he awaited his chance to shine.

Tiwary revealed his motivation mantra: “I am a very emotional person. I watch a lot of inspirational videos on Youtube to get motivated. I just kept working hard in the nets because it is not easy to get into the Indian team,” said Tiwary, who recently watched Derek Redmond’s 1992 Barcelona Olympic race, where the British athlete tore a hamstring while running the 400m. Redmond, who was down on the track, hobbled to complete the race on one leg and received a standing ovation. “Such videos really get me pumped up,” he added.

Tiwary had no qualms in declaring he’s ready for Test cricket. “I’ve been waiting for this opportunity. I am disappointed at not getting a hundred (today). There is a lot of competition for the No 6 spot in the Test side and it’s up to the selectors, but I’m ready for Test cricket,” said Tiwary, who has played eight ODIs and three T20 Internationals.

Tiwary and Irfan Pathan (46) carried on the good work done by Yuvraj Singh (59) and opener Abhinav Mukund (73). Mukund’s knock almost certainly makes him a favourite for the reserve opener’s slot.

Tiwary and Pathan put on 110 for the seventh wicket to put India ‘A’ in a commanding position. “It was a crucial partnership as we were looking at posting a score beyond 300,” said India ‘A’ coach Lalchand Rajput.
