Hansraj skipper scores 145 not out on Day One of Harris Shield Plate final against Dhirubhai Ambani; wants victory so that school earns promotion

Hansraj Morarji skipper Onkar Thakur scored an unbeaten 145 against Dhirubhai Ambani International School (BKC) to put the Andheri school in the driver’s seat on Day One of the three-day Harris Shield Plate Division final at Cross Maidan yesterday.

Opting to bat after winning the toss, Hansraj ended the day on 295-6.

Onkar slammed 24 fours in his 253-ball knock and was helped with useful contributions from Aakash Kolekar (39 runs) and Abhay Shinde (35 not out) en route. Onkar and opener Aakash first put on 80 runs, after which the skipper got together with Abhay (35 not out) and put on an unbeaten stand of 77 before close of play.

Hansraj were demoted to the Plate Division three years ago, and though they came close to earning a promotion last year, they eventually lost in the final.
It’s no wonder then that Onkar was not satisfied despite having recorded his highest score in the tournament.

“Last year, we were unlucky to lose in the final. However, this time if we manage to play well tomorrow morning, we stand a chance of winning this final and earning that promotion,” said the 15-year-old Andheri resident.

Speaking of his knock, Onkar said he was under pressure. “As wickets kept falling at the other end, I could not afford to play aggressively else I would have got my double century today itself. I hope to help my team post a huge total tomorrow,” he added.

Meanwhile, Dhirubhai
captain Agni Chopra admitted his team struggled. “Hansraj definitely have the edge. The wicket did not help us much. There was no movement for the seamers and even our spinners struggled,” said Chopra.
