Holi festival is just around the corner! It's that time of year again where we bathe ourselves in layer upon layer of vibrant colour without a care in the world! While the celebration brings happiness, love and light into your life, the festivities can be harsh on your hair.

Traditionally, the colours used were organic, made from herbs, spices and flower petals. The natural colours were full of nutrients and therapeutic value, leaving your hair luscious and your skin smooth. These days, we use synthetic colours instead, which are full of chemicals and can be harsh on your skin and hair.

A few quick precautions will go a long way to protect your hair from any damage this year. With these simple steps from celebrity hairstylist Asgar Saboo, you can enjoy an amazing Holi without punishing your hair!

  • Avoid using shampoo on your locks the day before Holi, as this can cause you to lose the essential oils present on your hair, leaving it exposed to damage.
  • Before adding any colours, ensure that you have oiled your hair well. A head massage with warm coconut oil will provide your hair with a layer of protection for the festival. The oil will also help the colours to wash off easily the next day.
  • If you don’t have coconut oil handy, olive or castor oil will also work a treat. If you suffer from dandruff or a sensitive scalp, add a few drops of lemon juice to the oil to protect your scalp from irritation.
  • The night before Holi, soak a towel in hot water and wrap it round your head. Leave this for around 30 minutes to an hour. The steam will cause your pores to open up, allowing for better absorption of the oils.
