Tortured by impotent husband's parents, woman commits suicide

Fed up with the relentless torture meted out to her by her in-laws after she revealed that her husband was impotent, a 23-year-old woman committed suicide by jumping in front of a local train in Malad (East) on Wednesday night.

The Malad railway police received a call on Wednesday night, informing them that a woman had died in a rail accident at 10.30 pm. Upon enquiry, they found that the woman, identified as Naina Pandav, was a resident of Wadharipada in Malad (East), where she lived with her husband and in-laws.

Driven to death: Naina's parents allege that her in-laws blamed her
for Ajay's impotency

The police informed Ajay, the woman's husband, who came to identify the body. Naina's in-laws passed on the information to her parents, who live in Surat.

It was their ill treatment and abuse that drove Naina to take her own life, they claimed.

Naina's father Vallabh Gandolia told the police that the couple had married in February. When she came to Mumbai to live with Ajay three months later, she realised that he was impotent.

"In June, Naina called us and told us about Ajay. I asked her to send him to Surat for treatment. Ajay's parents, however, asked us to send them the money for treatment, which I did," said Gandolia, in his statement to the police.

Assault
Gandolia added that soon after, Naina's in-laws began torturing and assaulting her over the issue, blaming her for Ajay's condition.

Gandolia said, "I promised her that I would bring our relatives to Mumbai, and get her separated from Ajay."
On Tuesday, Naina called up her brother and told him that she was afraid that her in-laws might kill her.

"This was not the first time Naina told me such a thing. She would always be on tenterhooks. I told her that I would pick her up on Wednesday and bring her back home. But before I could set out to rescue her, we heard that she had committed suicide," said Naina's younger brother Pradeep, with tears in his eyes.

Based on the complaint lodged by Naina's father and brother, the Dindoshi police have registered a case of abetment to suicide against Ajay and his parents.

"We have detained Ajay," said Vinay Kakde, senior police inspector of Dindoshi police station.
