Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) decision to follow the European concept of bed and breakfast led to conversion of around 500 modest houses into tourist homes in three districts of the Konkan region
The concept was developed way back in 1997, but the scheme is witnessing widespread popularity since the past few years.
“The sole motive behind the scheme is to provide self-employment to people of small towns, who otherwise have to come to the cities for their daily livelihood,” said retired senior regional manager of Konkan region of MTDC, Kiran Sulakhe.
While explaining how the concept was successful in the Konkan region, Sulakhe said that this region has always been a favoured picnic spot for tourists. Also since there were many places the MTDC couldn’t reach, a special arrangement was made wherein house owners with more than five self-contained rooms can offer their premises on rent as tourist homes.

Rustic cravings
MTDC officers surveyed such destinations and identified house owners willing to give their houses on rent.
“While doing so, we have given utmost priority to safety and comfort of our tourists.
The scheme is an instant hit among tourists, as they get to savour the local flavor, local culture and mouth-watering delicacies, which are an integral part of the Konkan region,” Sulakhe said.
He added that the MTDC does not collect any kind of fee from the house owners offering the bread and breakfast scheme.
“We only charge Rs 1,000 per year as renovation charges. Deciding the rent and other charges is the prerogative of the house owner and MTDC does not interfere in their business,” said Sulakhe.
Mostly from state
Arvinda Parkar, who operates one such home-tourist-stay at Ambolgad in Rajapur tehsil in Konkan said that most of his
visitors are from the state.
“We receive tourists mainly from Pune, Kolhapur and Sangli districts of Maharashtra. Similarly, large numbers of foreign tourists also visit Ambolgad and want to stay in a homely atmosphere. The accommodation of such home-stays is generally maintained in a way that tourist will get the feel of village atmosphere,” Arvinda Parkar said. u00a0
