New Delhi: Twitterati took to the micro-blogging site to express their individual views about the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts accused Yakub Memon's execution on Thursday.

While some of the tweets supported the decision, there were a fair amount of people who expressed their unhappiness with the hanging.

#Yakubhanged, a hashtag used by twitterati to share their views about Memon's hanging, was a top trend on Twitter during the day.

At least three out of the 10 trending hashtags -- #YakubHanged, #IndiaKaInsaf and #Memon till 9.30 a.m. -- were related to Memon's execution. #YakubHanged remained the top trend till late afternoon.

Politicians, journalists, social activists and students were among those who took to the micro-blogging site to express their respective viewpoints.

"It's strange to see proud scions of Mao, Lenin, Stalin demanding abolition of death penalty citing human rights.. #YakubHanged," @dmalok tweeted.

"APJ Abdul Kalam and Yakub Menon, two people of the same religion to be buried today. Choice is yours, how to live your life," @Dil_logical tweeted.

The mortal remains of former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam were laid to rest at his hometown Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu on Thursday forenoon. Yakub Memon was hanged to death early Thursday in Nagpur prison.

"Saddened by news that our government has hanged a human being. State-sponsored killing diminishes us all by reducing us to murderers too," Congress leader Shashi Tharoor tweeted.

Twitter has become very popular of late among social media users. At least 17 percent of the social network users in the country use the micro-blogging site, according to a report by market research firm eMarketer.
