Two children aged four and 10 were crushed by a truck after the motorbike they were travelling by lost balance and fell at RAK Marg near Wadala on Thursday night. The incident took place when one Nazir Iqbal Ansari (38), his son Shafi Ansari (7), niece Umera Ansari (10) and nephew Tanveer Ansari (4) were on their way to watch the Eid procession.

The incident occurred immediately after they took a turn from the main road, a family friend said. According to police officials, the bike fell after the right front tyre of the truck came in contact with it. The children collapsed and the rear tyre of the truck went over Umera and Tanveer.

Nazir and Shafi escaped with minor injuries. “We took the injured to the KEM hospital and a group of people followed the driver and caught him near Fatima school in Sewri,” said Imran Khan, a witness. The truck driver, identified as Phulchand Prajapati, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, was arrested by RAK Marg police after the locals handed him over to the cops.

“The case was registered at 3.40 am on Friday after we were informed by officials of KEM hospital,” said sub-inspector Pratap Gadge from RAK Marg police station said. “The 4-year-old boy, Tanveer, was declared dead on arrival while Umera breathed her last after admission,” he added.

Nazir, a resident of Kamla Nagar Chawl in Wadala, was taking the three children to show them pre-Eid decorations in adjacent areas. “Nazir had promised to show the decorations to the trio but because he was busy and wouldn’t have been able to take them to the julus on Friday, he did that on Thursday,” said a family friend.

The accused has been booked under section 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder). The accused was produced in court and has been sent to judicial custody.
