Although reports suggest that type 2 diabetes, which is the most common form of diabetes, has surged in recent years, diabetologists are alarmed at the increase in type1 cases.

Various surveys have shown that type 1 ((juvenile onset) diabetes has risen from five per cent in 2008 to eight per cent. They are also witnessing
more number of children being diagnosed with the ailment.

Type 1 diabetes was thought to affect a fixed portion of the population. The increase suggests that environment or behaviour may play a role. “Reports from various institutes state that India will be the diabetes capital of the world because of type 2 diabetes cases, which is increasing in India and in our city also.

Along with this, type 1diabetes is also increasing slowly. During the last 15 years, number of new patients diagnosed per month has increased to three which was hardly one earlier,” said Diabetologist Dr Liteen Patil.

Expressing the same view Dr Abhay Muth, consultant diabetologists and president of Diabetes Care and Research Foundation, said, “I come across six to eight new patients afflicted with diabetes every month. This rate was very low earlier.”

“Pancreatic infection and viral infection is the most common reason of type 1 diabetes. People with type 1 diabetes produce very little or no insulin. This can affect people of any age, but usually occurs in children or young adults. This can occur between ages 0 to 15” Patil said.

“It’s very difficult to diagnose the illness in small children, and they are mostly admitted to hospitals in a critical condition. Most patients arrive at the hospital in diabetic coma. In such cases sugar level increases to 500 and many times 1,000. These children have to take insulin regularly, some time five to six doses daily,” said Dr Muth.
