After months of undergoing treatment post a tragic train accident, where he lost both his legs, Aspi Sepoy, 46, the caretaker of the Parsi museum in Udvada, will finally go back home on Wednesday. Sepoy had lost his legs in September 2017 when he slipped into the platform gap at Udvada station while trying to board a train.

Speaking to mid-day at the BD Petit Parsee general hospital, where he has been recovering since the mishap, Sepoy said, "I am immensely grateful to each and every person who donated any sum — however big or small — towards my recovery. I am a very poor man and would not have been able to afford this, so thanks to all of you."

Always optimistic
In the last three months, the global Zoroastrian community has stood strongly next to Sepoy, having generously donated R64 lakh for his medical and rehabilitation costs, in an effort spearheaded by Dinshaw Tamboly, chairman of the World Zoroastrian Organization Trust (WZOT).

"Aspi is going home and all is coming to a happy ending," said Tamboly, adding, "He will be discharged from the hospital at 11 am on Wednesday and will be going home to Navsari in a private taxi. We were always optimistic about his recovery, but this has only been possible because of his willpower."

The funds raised by the community have gone into helping Sepoy get prosthetic limbs from the Endolite centre. He has been practising walking in them for the last month and a half. "I have been given two sets of prosthetic limbs: the smaller one is for walking around at home, while the larger one is for outdoor use. The doctors say I have to practise walking in them at least two to three times every day for the next six to eight months."

Sepoy is excited to see his children once again, "They came to know about my accident only 10 days after it happened. They'll be extremely happy to have me back home after so long. I will not be able to go back to work immediately, but I will be receiving a salary of Rs 12,500 every month from WZOT."

As per the doctor's instructions, he will come to the Endolite centre in Mahim after two months, but in case of an emergency, he has been advised to go straight to the Endolite centre in Surat.
