From Cuban classics to Afro beats mixed with Bangladeshi Folk - Lokkhi Terra, a World music collective creates a seamless confluence of musical traditions from across the globe in their performances and they are set to captivate Mumbaikars with their magical repertoire
It might seem like a daunting task to keep a group of 12 musicians together, but award-winning pianist Kishon Khan does this with ease in his World music collective, Lokkhi Terra — a Bengali phrase that refers to someone who is beautiful but slightly cross-eyed; the basic thought being to find beauty in imperfection.

“The band came together in London where we all live. We are all musicians who play in multiple bands across multiple genres, so, this type of project comes easily to us. For over 15 years, we’ve all been playing together in different bands, and all of my musicians are band leaders in their own right, so managing the band is easy. We have a lot of fun,” says Khan, who has released two albums with his band — No Visa Required and Che Guava’s Rickshaw Diaries.
Lokkhi Terra plays World Jazz — from Cuban classics to Afro-beats to Samba and funky World Fusion. The musicians mix traditions from around the world, using Bengali Folk and groove as their starting points. “Our mixes are constantly evolving; I believe there are many connections between the music of South Asia, Africa and Latin America,” informs the pianist.
Along with Khan, the collective features Cuban vocalist and percussionist Javier Camilo, Cuban bassist Jimmy Martinez and drummer Tansay Omar among others. The collective has performed at various venues including Ronnie Scotts to the Royal Albert Hall to Glastonbury and Womad in London.
Throwing light on their Mumbai gig, Khan shares, “On this trip, we will try to take the audience on a trip around the world, musically, focusing on music from Latin America, Africa and the Caribbean, with sprinklings of Funk and Jazz.”
Khan also hopes to meet musicians in Delhi and Mumbai to lay down connections for the future. “There’s a lot more collaborating to do,” he adds. Currently, the band is in the process of finishing their third album, as well asu00a0an album with a Folk singer from Bangladesh called Baby Aktar.
