Unseeded Nigel wins District Badminton Championships

Unseeded Nigel D'Sa created a flutter after beating top seed Firoz Mulani 21-12, 21-17 to bag the men's singles title in the CCI-GMBA District Badminton Championships.

Nigel, who had conquered second seed Atman Ajmera in the semi-finals, dominated his opponent in the final and made Firoz dance to his tunes.

Meanwhile, Vishnavi Iyer lived up to her billing by winning the women’s as well as the girls under-19 singles titles, beating both her rivals in straight games.

Results: Men’s singles (Final): Nigel D’Sa bt Firoz Mulani 21-12, 21-17. Women’s singles (Final): Vaishnavi Iyer bt Akshaya Warang 21-11, 21-11.

Girls U-19 singles (Final): Vaishnavi Iyer bt Akshaya Warang 21-15, 21-10.

Boys U-19 doubles (Final): Viplav Kuvale/Yash DSalgaonkar bt Durvesh Chattopadhyay/Siddhesh Arolkar 21-18, 21-18.

Boys U-19 singles (Final): Pratik Tiwari bt Amey Mangaonkar 21-15, 17-21, 21-16.

Girls U-17 singles (Final): Kareena Madan bt Akshaya Warang 21-13, 21-19.

Girls U-15 singles (Final): Riya Arolkar bt Rajvi Sampat 21-5, 21-7.

Girls U-13 singles (Final):Pooja Kachare bt Pai Prabhu 21-19, 14-21, 21-19.

Women’s doubles (Final): Akshaya Warang/Riya Arolkar bt Anchal Vaswani/Tanvi Ajmera 21-5, 21-7.

Men’s doubles (Final): Mangrish Palekar/Nigel D’Sa bt Deepak Jetley/Harsh Jhaveri 21-9, 21-12.

Sushrut beats Arjit
Sushrut Karmarkar scored a stunning straight games win over top seed Arjit Bose to make his maiden men’s singles final in the Li-NING-JVPGC Suburban District badminton championships, hosted by Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana Club. The collegian notched up a 21-17, 21-9 win and now takes on second seed Amit Kshatriya in the title clash. Amit beat Murli Subramanium 21-11, 21-17 in the other semi-final.

Air India ‘B’ win

Air India ‘B’ pulled off an 5-4 win against Central Railway Mumbai Division in a Senior Division match of the MHAL League yesterday courtesy goals from Anil Aldrin, Ashish Gonsalves, Davinder Singh, Simon D’Souza and Cornelius D’Costa.
