Babulal Verma, the railway employee who was arrested for allegedly running a prostitution racket from a railway rest house in Marine Lines, would frequent pubs in the city where he would make acquaintances with girls and ultimately recruit them, said police officials
Verma was booked under relevant sections of the Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act. Senior Police Inspector Avinash Sonawane of the LT Marg police station “Eclipse in CST, Pulse in Bandra, Madness in Khar and Blazer in Santacruz, were the pubs Verma frequented. We will be making inquiries with the owners and the employees of these establishments.” Verma was handed over to the LT Marg police for further investigation on Sunday night by the Social Service Branch, which raided the rest house on Saturday night. Police officials started interrogating Verma yesterday.
Officials also recovered a diary with names and contact numbers of 16 girls. When contacted, all the numbers were switched off. They have now requested service providers for registration details of all the 16 numbers. In addition, officials would be contacting the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Surat to learn more about the investigation they had conducting against Verma in 1999. Railway authorities would also be contacted to find out what action was taken against him. Verma’s past professional record remains unclear as of now.
