Wah Vyas!

An award is always special. And when you get an award instituted in the name of your hero, the feeling is doubly great. Renowned santoor maestro Pandit Satish Vyas who was felicitated with the Kumar Gandharva Rashtriya Samman over the weekend is on cloud nine. He talks to CS about what makes this award special:

On a high note
An award means a lot to us artists. It feels good to know that people take notice of our work and appreciate it. It boosts our morale and adds to our sense of responsibility to excel in our chosen field. As a child, I attended a lot of concerts of Kumar Gandharva. To say he was a great musician is an understatement. So, getting an award in his memory is just great.u00a0

In my guru's footsteps
My guru, the legendary Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, also happens to be the pioneer of the santoor in India. I took up the santoor only because I was inspired by him. He's a man of principles, poise and spirituality. It's very tough for an average human being like me to emulate him but I am grateful to God for a guru like him.

Attracting young blood
Of late, a number of youngsters are taking to classical music. The surge of reality shows has increased the scope of classical music in India. If you want to learn any instrument, you need to find the right teacher.

I would suggest that beginners learn the harmonium before they start with the santoor. That gives you a good idea about sur and tuning, which is very important in the santoor. And of course, attending classical concerts regularly also helps.u00a0u00a0
