MNS members aspiring to get a ticket for the forthcoming municipal elections will now have to clear a written examination, which will test their knowledge on law and procedure related to the civic body. Anil Shidore, state general secretary, MNS, said, "The 100-marks paper will have objective and descriptive questions. The candidates will get one-and-half hours. Many have welcomed this initiative and are excited to appear for the exam."

Besides the city, the exam will be held in nine other cities in the state and any one who is a primary member of the MNS can appear for it. "It is for the first time that any political party has taken such an initiative to ensure deserving candidates contest the election. All the exam papers will be checked by political experts in Mumbai and marks of each candidate will be disclosed during an interview on December 7. The reference book for the exam will be published on Tuesday," said Shidore.

Sitting MNS corporators will also have to appear for the exam, irrespective of the work they have done in their respective wards in the last five years. Rajendra (Babu) Wagaskar, Koregaon Park corporator, said, "For the last couple of days, I have been preparing for the exam, which reminds me of my school days. The party has taken a good initiative which will be helpful in getting knowledgeable people into politics." Vidya Randhir, a teacher from Swami Vivekananda School in Dapodi, said: "My husband is encouraging me to contest this election, as it will be impartial now."

Women on top
As many as 575 aspirants have registered their names for the exam, and today is the last date to fill the forms. As many as 60 per cent of the candidates are women, most of them school teachers.
