Low-cost airline offers massive discounts, better menus

Low-cost airfares are back. At least if you're planning to fly SpiceJet. The airline has announced a discount of

up to 40 per cent on airfare if a combination of sandwich and juice is pre-booked.

More people opted to fly domestic in February (33.36 lakh) compared to January (33.26 lakh) despite all airlines withdrawing low cost fares.

SpiceJet's chief commercial officer Samyukth Sridhran said, "We have been selling food on board for over a year now and fliers felt it was time to refresh our menu. Our healthy wholesome sandwiches have distinctly different fillings. We will offer a new type from a set of three."

For example, you can pay around Rs 6,000 for a Mumbai-Delhi flight ticket that could cost around
Rs 10,000 if you book the food combination online.

And if you don't want to book food in advance, vegetarian sandwiches are sold on a SpiceJet flight for Rs 80 and non-vegetarian ones for Rs 100. Tea and coffee is served with cookies for Rs 20.

Traditionally, low-cost carriers have selectively been selling peanuts, aerated soft drink cans, chips and sandwiches and a small bottle of packaged water comes free. "Kingfisher Red changed this trend in October when we started offering hot and cold food for free," said Kingfisher's general manager, marketing, Vikram Malhotra.u00a0 Kingfisher Red's in-flight menu has idli-sambhar, dahi vada or kathi rolls.

Indigo, which has recently started flying out of Mumbai, too is getting innovative. "We are in the process of re-working our in-flight menu and plans are on to rope in a celebrity chef," said an airline official.

But if you plan to fly by Go or Paramount airlines, you'll have to continue to buy food.

Sumptuous sandwiches
Fliers across lost-cost airlines can soon expect an elaborate sandwich spread with corn and spinach, chargrilled vegetable, paneer bhurji, spicy chicken, mint chicken and pepper chicken
