Civic authorities say no repair work can be carried out on pothole ridden Dadar flower market bridge until the rain lets up

The flyover built above the flower market in Dadar West is proving to be a nightmare for motorists travelling towards South Mumbai sinceu00a0 the bridge is ridden with potholes every few feet, causing traffic jams and accidents.

The condition of the bridge, say commuters, was horrific event before the monsoon set in. The rains have made it worse.u00a0 "The problem of potholes on this road is not new. But the rains have worsened the situation. The potholes are now gigantic. Besides, it's difficult to spot them due to water logging. I met with a minor accident on the bridge last month after I lost balance while riding my scooter," 41 year-old businessman Hemant Haria said.

Speaking to Sunday MiD DAY, Mahim Senior Police Inspector (Traffic) S S Tondwalkar said, "The condition of the bridge is pathetic. Motorists get stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic, often driving at speeds of less than 10 km/ per hour. The situation is worse during peak hours."

Siddharth M, 30, a student said, "It was the duty of BMC to fill the potholes before the rains but it did not do its job well. Now, there are no less than 150 small and big potholes on this bridge. At times, it takes us more than 20 minutes to cross the bridge that's less than 200 meters in length."

The traffic police department has already written a letter to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) about the condition of the road but no step has been taken. Last month, traffic police officials had filled the potholes temporarily with debris, since BMC was not taking the issue seriously.

"We have already written letters to the G North Ward of BMC, requesting them to immediately fill the potholes since this is one of the most important roads in Mumbai, connecting Mahim to Lower Parel and Worli. Commuters going towards Byculla and CST also use this road. I have personally spoken with concerned BMC officials about the problem and according to them, the potholes can be filled only when the the rains let up, and the roads are dry," said Tondwalkar. The G North ward officer was not available for comment.
