Says actor Prakash Raj of Kannada films at the Bengalooru International Film Festival 2009

Chief minister B S Yeddyurappa was one among the many stellar guests who inaugurated Bengalooru International Film Festival 2009 yesterday.

The seven-day festival organised by the Suchitra Film society will feature Kannada films, both golden oldies such as Gandhada Gudi, Beladingalabale and Muttinahara and recent hits like Mungaru Male and Milana at Badami House.

In his speech, the chief minister promised to provide subsidy for deserving films and land to set up a film complex for the Kannada industry.

Actor Prakash Raj, who also spoke, addressed the lack of cultural identity in Kannada films.

"Be it a Japanese or Chinese movie, they are globally recognised. Even within India, film industries of different languages have their own identity. Take, for example, the Kerala, Bengali or Marathi film industries. They are rich in culture and tradition. Yet the Kannada film industry has no identity, despite the rich cultural heritage of the state," he said.

Others present on the occasion were actors Ramesh Arvind, Puneet Rajkumar, Sharmila Mandre, besides producers and directors.
