As the trial in the brutal gang rape and killing of the 23-yr-old medical student formally began yesterday, the victim's father said he would do all he could to ensure justice is delivered and the accused are hanged

All those behind the December 16 gang rape should be hanged, said the father of the 23-year-old victim stressing that he would pursue the case till the end.

As the case against the five accused in the gang-rape of the young woman, who succumbed to her grievous injuries on December 29, began in a Delhi court, her father addressed a press conference on Tuesday to assert that he would approach the courts to ensure justice was done.

“I want all six of them to be hanged. We will go to the court and pursue the case till the end,” he said, with his son by his side. The sixth accused is a juvenile.

He said he didn’t have “much knowledge” about the ordinance, promulgated last week that awards stricter punishment for sexual crimes against women, including death sentence in rare cases.

First witness
The victim’s friend, a software engineer, identified the bus on which the attack took place. The 28-year-old, confined to a wheelchair as a result of injuries sustained in the attack, confirmed that a white bus was the vehicle on which the deadly assault took place on December 16, his father said.

“Yes, my son could identify the bus. The cross-examination is going to start now,” said the father, whose son cannot be named for legal reasons.

“My son will go to any lengths to ensure that the guilty are punished,” the father had earlier said as the two of them entered the courtroom in the Saket district.

“He will cooperate and is prepared to answer any questions posed by the defence.” The friend will be cross-examined by defence lawyers today. The judge has banned all reporting of proceedings inside the courtroom and ordered lawyers not to speak to journalists.

The fast track court of Additional Sessions Judge Yogesh Khanna started day-to-day trial in the case after it framed charges of murder, gang rape and kidnapping, among others, under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against five of the six accused.

Another shocker: Man inserts iron rod into woman’s mouth in Delhi
A 24-year-old woman was critically injured here after a man inserted an iron rod into her mouth during a rape attempt, police said yesterday.
Anil Kumar (26), a cable operator tried to rape the woman finding her alone at her house in south Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar around 8.30 pm on Monday, said the officer. “Kumar went to the woman’s home to collect monthly rent for the cable TV. Finding the woman alone, he tried to rape her. He inserted an iron rod inside her mouth when she was crying for help,” said the officer. Hearing the woman’s voices some neighbours came to help her but Kumar managed to flee from the spot. He was later arrested. The woman was rushed to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) where her condition is critical, said the officer.
