Carcass, the British extreme metal band, who will perform at the upcoming rock festival Big69, is looking forward to its India debut

'We're older and wiser'

The British extreme metal band from Liverpool, Carcass, was formed in 1985. In 1993, they gained popularity with
their melodic deathmetal album Heartwork. After disbanding in the mid ’90s, they reunited in 2007 for touring purposes.

However, the line up for Carcass, which is arguably one of the biggest influences in the death/grindcore and melodic death metal genre, seems to have become permanent with drummer Daniel Wilding and guitarist Ben Ash joining founding members Bill Steer and Jeff Walker. In 2013, the band came up with the album Surgical Steel, which received rave reviews, earning a Top 50 position on the US Billboard 200 charts. Surgical Steel was named 2013’s The Album of the Year by several metal magazines and websites, including Metal Assault, MetalSucks and Decibel Magazine. In January 2014, the band performed at 70000 Tons of Metal and headlined the Agglutination Festival in August last year. Carcass is all set to make their debut in India at Mumbai’s rock festival Big69 on January 17 and 18. Says Walker, “We put a lot of effort into every show we play. We’ve never played in India, so surely any song we do should be special for the audience.” Excerpts from an interview with bassist/ frontman Jeff Walker:

Q. How has the band changed since you set it up?
A. We’re older and wiser. We’re technically better musicians — ironically, this doesn’t necessarily make for better music — sometimes creativity comes out of youthful exuberance.

Q. With Surgical Steel, you guys made a great comeback. What was the plan while releasing it?
A. The aim was to make the best Carcass album ever. As to whether we succeeded or not, well, that is not for us to
decide.

Q. Now that Dan Wilding and Ben Ash have joined you, are you planning another album with the new team?
A. Dan Wilding played on Surgical Steel. I am certain the writing process will be very similar to that album.

Carcass will perform at the Big69 Festival on January 17 at 8.30pm in Richardson & Cruddas, Byculla. Tickets are available at www.insider.in/big69
