What's your R and R recipe?

You don't necessarily bring your work home, but I think it knows where you live and it follows you. Young professionals share after-work secrets that help them stay sane and focused

Some days are more stressful than the others, so make sure you try to unwind and relax before you tackle another stressful working day. This might not be possible if you have kids, so you might have to work it out with your spouse. You could take turns with the household responsibilities so one of you can have some alone time.

I unwind by spending time with my pet and family. Over the weekends, my mom and I cook together. On weekdays, it's usually an hour or two with family, catching up with gossip and playing the fool with my nephew. I also cook dinner once in a while on weekdays. I find cooking extremely relaxing, especially if my day has been particularly tough.

Software engineers like me are really bad. After a long day at work, we just hit the sack, and then we wake up and work on our laptops so that we can finish pending work.

I'm a huge Tom & Jerry fan. My DVD rack is full of Tom and Jerry classics, and the moment I reach home I reach out for my beer mug and switch on my TV and laugh out loud. Some days I play on my Nintendo V. It is so much fun. After I have done that for at least an hour, I am ready to step out into the beautiful Bangalore night to further unwind with friends.

The bar in our house, complete with barstools, music system, dim lights and the works, is where we go to recuperate. We talk away our blues, if any! I fight my Monday blues by religiously watching a morning show every single Monday at a multiplex. On weekends, we like to take short trips to our farmhouse in Coorg.

My work is quite stressful. So I need my one hour of meditation, which I call "the cleansing of my soul". It might sound a bit extreme, coming as it does from a techie, but I think it's the best way to finish my day.

After work I spend time cooking for wife and myself. I normally make tasty Indian food. If I'm not cooking after work I love to listen to music. I am very eclectic in my taste in music. I love to unwind by playing with my aunt's dogs. She has 28 dogs in allu2014cocker spaniels, Alsatians, dachshunds and mongrels.

Most of the times I reach home very late and then like a typical couch potato I switch on my TV for some news. You can't really go out much on weekdays, as the traffic is so bad. I also like to unwind with my one-year-old Vedant, who takes away all the stress of the day, the moment I see him. I love to click his photographs in my spare time and believe me his smile is an instant joy.

I normally unwind by extending a helping hand to less fortunate people. That gives me a great high and I feel God has empowered me to empower others. Most of the times though I hang out with a bunch of friends at a watering hole like TGIF or F Bar.u00a0

Classic ways to unwind

Pamper yourself

Try to distance yourself from worrisome distractions. The number one relaxation technique at home is a nice bubble bath. Many men secretly enjoy taking bubble baths but won't admit it to their friends! There are many lines of bath products that are marketed to have a calming effect like lavender or chamomile. Carry your iPod or CD player inside to drown out noise and distraction.

Take care of your body
Exercise might not be relaxing, but it is a great way to unwind and relieve stress. You can work out at home with some good music or with the television on. Yoga is very relaxing. You might want to take your workout outdoors and enjoy the scenery. Go for a long walk, run or ride a bike and enjoy the weather and outdoors.

Watch television or a movie
Cuddle up with your significant other and catch a good film. Comedies will definitely help you to unwind. Try to steer clear of dramas that are filled with sadness and tragedy.

Express yourself
Start a blog to express yourself. Expressing your thoughts and opinions can be a good stress buster sometimes.
Treat yourself
Treat yourself to something nice. This could be anything from exotic food to an extravagant shopping spree, depending on what you need and what your budget is.

Go out and do something fun
Spend time with friends and family. You could go see a movie, go out for a drink and dinner or a play. Anything that doesn't involve work can be relaxing. Don't limit yourself to going out only on the weekends. You should enjoy every day regardless of where it falls in the lineup of the week.

Take a nap
Taking a nap can be really refreshing to let your body and mind relax. You can wake up with a clean slate, forget about the day's events and use your renewed energy to go about your evening plans. Be careful not to nap for too long because you might have difficulty falling asleep at bedtime.

Call a friend
Calling a friend and venting or just chatting can be fun and relaxing. Maintaining personal relationships is important to a person's overall state of well-being.

Read a book
Reading a book is also a common method of unwinding. Just like with movies, you may want to limit yourself to what you read because negative content could influence your mood.

Have a drink
Relax over a beer or a glass of wine, or go out for a drink. You could even take it in with you if you are going to relax in the tub. If you don't drink alcoholic beverages, then make yourself a refreshing smoothie.

Meditation and breathing exercises
Many people swear by meditation and controlled breathing exercises to relax and relieve stress.

Play a game
Many people find video games relaxing. These can include XBOX, Playstation, Wii, and computer games. You could play cards or board games like Taboo or Pictionary with friends or family.u00a0

And finally, just smile!
