Yesterday, the phrase when the cat is away, the mice come out to play held true, as traffic officials who usually man the JJ flyover were absent owing to the inauguration of the long-awaited Lalbaug flyover, leaving JJ flyover open u00a0and completely unmonitored.

While traffic at Dr Balasaheb Ambedkar road between Parel and Byculla travelled at a snail's pace owing to the presence of VVIPs and the Chief Minister Prithivraj Chavan who had come for the opening of the 2.4 km flyover.

On a regular day, there are several police officials present near the starting of the JJ flyover ensuring that no two-wheeler can use the JJ flyover. However, yesterday when this correspondent reached JJ flyover around 4 pm, not a single cop was to be found, resulting in several bikers zipping past.
The traffic police had restricted the entry of two-wheelers on the JJ flyover from April 1, 2010, after it was reported that a majority of accidents on the flyover involved two-wheelers.
The traffic statistics showed that 31 people had been killed and 66 injured on the JJ flyover between 2005-2010, and 90 per cent of the victims were two-wheeler riders.
