Why Bollywood actors prefer shaking a leg in their productional ventures

When an actor turns producer, more often than not, the immediate question is: will he/she be a hands-on producer or is the person just another Mr/Ms Moneybags? But as it turns out now, actors-turned-producers these days are putting all their weight behind their projects from day one to their releases. While some make special appearances in their films, others go a step further and even perform item numbers to up the film’s glam quotient. hitlist digs up a few such instances from recent times…


John Abraham
Film: Vicky Donor (2012)
Director: Shoojit Sircar



Lowdown: Launching two fresh faces — Ayushmann Khurrana and Yami Gautam — with his maiden production venture, the model-turned-actor-turned-producer danced like never before in the promotional song, Rum Whisky.

Shilpa Shetty
Film: Dishkiyaaoon (2014)
Director: Sanamjit Singh Talwar

Lowdown: The actress-turned-producer made an onscreen appearance after a gap of six years; her last appearance was an item number in Dostana. But for her home production, she shook a leg with actor Harman Baweja in the song, Tu Mere Type Ka Nahi Hai Re.

Aamir Khan
Film: Delhi Belly (2010)
Director: Abhinay Deo

Lowdown: Till date, Aamir Khan has been part of only one item song. He agreed to feature in the retro song, I Hate You (Like I Love You), as this was for his home production that also happened to star his nephew, Imran Khan, in a lead role.

Akshay Kumar
Film: Fugly (2014)
Director: Kabir Sadanand

Lowdown: Not only did Akki perform in the title song of the former’s home production, but he also roped in friend Salman Khan to shake a leg along with him.

Hrithik Roshan
Film: Krazzy 4 (2008)
Director: Jaideep Sen

Lowdown: For his father’s production venture, Hrithik danced in a promotional video. Named Krazzy 4 title tracks, another song featured Shah Rukh Khan in it.

Sanjay Dutt
Film: Woodstock Villa (2008)
Director: Hansal Mehta

Lowdown: One of the co-producers of the film, Sanju Baba made a special appearance in the song, Kyun Wo Raaton Se Neende Churati Hai.

Shah Rukh Khan
Film: Always Kabhi Kabhi (2011)
Director: Roshan Abbas

Lowdown: King Khan made a special appearance in his home production where Ali Fazal, Giselli Monteiro, Zoa Morani and Satyajeet Dubey had key roles.

Of friendships and favours

Several Bollywood actors have helped out their co-stars by doing a cameo in their productions...
>> Salman Khan made a special appearance in Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009). Later, Ranbir Kapoor returned the favour by appearing in Sallu’s maiden production venture, Chillar Party. Recently, Salman was seen in brother-in-law Atul Agnihotri’s film, O Teri (2014) as well as close friend Preity Zinta’s debut home production, Ishkq In Paris (2013).

>> Ranbir Kapoor has a tapori item number in Amitabh Bachchan’s upcoming film, Bhootnath Returns.


>> Kareena Kapoor made a special appearance in the song, It’s Rocking, in Kya Love Story Hai (2007) due to her rapport with Tusshar Kapoor.


>> Vidya Balan did a laavni performance in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Ferrari ki Sawaari (2012). It may be pointed out that Chopra had launched her in Parineeta (2005).


>> Madhuri Dixit performed in an item number for Karan Johar’s film, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), while Priyanka Chopra couldn’t say no to a song in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram-Leela (2013).


>> Given her equation with Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha was more than happy to do an item number in Himmatwala (2013) and Boss (2013).
