Why Mumbai foodies must head to Lower Parel's Silverspoon Gourmet

Two years ago, chef Joshua D’Souza, along with his wife Neha Manekia, started the Silverspoon Gourmet, a European food catering company. Having moved to a new kitchen in Dhanraj Industrial Estate at Lower Parel, a few months ago, next month they open their doors to foodies looking for culinary experience that does not bind them to the chair and table like in a restaurant.

The first event, on April 19, is an curated cheese experience, where Chef Joshua will whip up an eight-course meal and also give a demonstration of cooking with cheese. “People who are fed up of sit-down dinners can book a slot with us — it could be couples, friends or family. We have a capacity to host 40 people. This is a wonderful platform to meet like-minded people and learn more about the food you eat,” says Neha, when I visited them last week.

On the list of upcoming events are grilling sessions, poetry readings and movie nights. The menu still remains is European gourmet served in a mess-free way, which is a specialty of Silverspoon Gourmet.

Chef Joshua, who had been quiet all this while, brightens up when ask him about the cuisine. “While we serve traditional dishes such as Shepherd’s Pie, we have taken a step ahead and modernised the dishes. The crèpe, which is usually sweet, turns savoury here, mini roll, while the gnocchi, which is usually made of potato, is made from pumpkin. Silverspoon Gourmet’s feel is more of a garage set up, where you can be comfortable,” smiles Chef Joshua.

Tasting
I tried the Pesto Crepe with Cream Cheese. The melt-in-the-mouth crepe is topped with bell peppers. Next, I tried the Pumpkin Gnocchi, each piece served on a silver spoon. A burst of the vegetable's natural sweetness, intermingled with butter and parsley and chilli flakes, this is the quirkiest version I had ever tasted. While the food and ambience is definitely great, finding the space can be a task. However, Neha promised us that a signage was underway.
