Will Narayan Rane contest the legislative council bypoll or not? The political circle is abuzz with such speculations, especially after opposition parties and BJP's ruling partner Shiv Sena are trying to consolidate their position

Will Narayan Rane contest the legislative council bypoll or not? The political circle is abuzz with such speculations, especially after opposition parties and BJP's ruling partner Shiv Sena are trying to consolidate their position to cause Rane's defeat. Sources said that Rane would meet chief minister Devendra Fadnavis before taking a final decision. Rane had lost a by-election in Bandra for an Assembly seat to the Sena, and before that the Sena had defeated him in his home turf, Sindhudurg.

The odds are stacked against Rane, but considering his might, gathering extra votes to register a win should not be a problem, said a senior political leader. With BJP putting in all its 122 votes and 20 independents joining in, Rane may need a few more votes to surpass the total that the Congress, NCP and Sena might put together.

Things may change further if multiple candidates are in the fray for the December 7 poll in which members of the state Assembly will take part.

If BJP fields Rane from its quota, the CM will have to help the former CM to get elected. That would mean convincing the Sena to help or asking NCP to pitch in with required votes. Rane too would try his own wooing power if he contests.

However, since nothing is certain, and Rane will have another chance to go to the upper house next July when 11 MLCs will retire, he is unlikely to take any chances this time, said a BJP leader.
