With my harasser out on bail, I fear for my life: Ola customer

Even though the police have arrested the Ola cab driver, for molesting and stalking a 30-year-old woman who was his customer, she says she fears that now he is given bail he might return to take revenge from her. The accused had previously escaped after the incident and five days later, a special team of Dindoshi police arrested him.

Careless approach
Speaking to mid-day, the woman said, “The incident was no less than a nightmare. I was so scared when the accused came running behind me. The cab service provider should be more responsible. When I called them (Ola cabs) they were very casual in their approach. I asked about the safety and they replied by saying that all they can do is remove the person from their service and nothing else. I was a little shocked by their careless approach.”

The woman is a senior executive with a private sector firm in Powai and resides in Goregaon. The accused in the case is 39-year-old cabbie Pradeep Tiwari. mid-day reported on his arrest yesterday: ‘Cabbie held for harassing, stalking woman customer.’ However, after being produced in court, the cabbie was let out on bail.

The harassment stared on May 2, when the woman took Tiwari’s Ola cab from her office. The accused made obscene gestures and started passing lewd comments. “I was so scared I immediately gave money and rushed to my apartment. The accused came behind me and even asked my building watchman about me. What followed was scarier: he started calling me on my number. I made a complaint to Ola but got a very careless reply. The cab service provider should check the drivers before employing them. I could have been raped or murdered.”

The woman added, “The driver knows where I work and where I stay. I fear he can approach me to take revenge anytime. Mumbai is safe, but such people are defaming its name.” She added, “The cops calmed me down and were extremely helpful. I was given a police car and female officer accompanied me to my home. But I am not happy as the accused is out on bail, roaming free.”

Full security
Police inspector Ravi Adane said, “We have given the personal numbers of senior officers and will provide full security to the woman.”

Senior police inspector Avinash Sawant said, “The woman should approach the cops without any fear. We are going to take strong preventive action against the accused.”

Stay alert all the time
The woman said. “There are several women in the city who travel alone like me. They should remain alert all the time. If they find anything suspicious, they should refrain from taking the cab or call the cops right away.”
