Woman commits suicide after boyfriend refused to marry her

A 25-year-old woman yesterday ended her life by jumping off the terrace of a 15-storey Borivli high-rise after her boyfriend allegedly refused to marry her. The woman identified as Sangeeta Patel who worked as a domestic help in the same building has, however, left a suicide note stating that nobody is responsible for her death and that she committed suicide of her own accord.

Police investigating the case have sent Sangeeta’s body for a post-mortem to Bhagwati Hospital in Borivli (W), and following the revelation in the suicide note have registered a case of accidental death.

Tragic end: Sangeeta Patel

The incident occurred at Neel Tower, located at Devidas Road, at 2 pm. Police said that the building watchman was alerted by a loud thud, and on inspection found the body of the deceased. The watchman notified the police and told them that since the deceased person frequented the building daily, he didn’t suspect anything.

Borivli police officials then informed Sangeeta’s family members, including her brother Santosh who resides with them at a SRA building, also located at Devidas Road, only a few metres away from Neel Tower.

Santosh, who works at a private firm told the cops that his sister had been depressed since the past three to four days, and had not been going to work. He also said that his sister was in a relationship with a man named Rupesh, a LIC agent, since the past few years. Santosh said that his family members had asked Rupesh to marry Sangeeta, however, he kept postponing the subject.

A few days earlier, when the family spoke to him, he refused to marry her. Sangeeta, however, was adamant on marrying him. “Although we had told Sangeeta that we would get her married elsewhere, she did not listen and kept insisting that she would only marry Rupesh,” said Santosh in his statement to the Borivli police.

Santosh further told cops that after not reporting to work for four days, Sangeeta had told him that she would go to work on Thursday. “We have registered a case of accidental death at present, and are in the process of recording Rupesh’s statement to ascertain whether Sangeeta was depressed due to his refusal to marry her,” said a police officer from Borivli police station. u00a0u00a0
