A 55-year-old woman has been crushed to death in a horror accident after the rear tyre of a reversing truck got wedged in a drainage chamber, then keeled over to its left side, sandwiching the victim between the truck and the ground
The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon at a construction site in Vakola, Santacruz (E). The deceased woman has been identified as Sheela Fernandez, a resident of nearby Krishna Apartments, who had arrived in the city a month ago from Dubai.

According to Vakola police officials, while the victim was making her way to her office, she had to pass though the construction site. At the same time, a truck was reversing to enter the site. “Seeing a gap between the reversing truck and a wall, Sheela thought she could pass through the left side. Unfortunately, the cover of the drainage chamber caved in and the rear tyre of the truck got wedged in it. Subsequently, the truck fell on its left side, resting on the wall with Sheela trapped between the truck and the wall. Within a few seconds, the wall gave way, and she was crushed as the truck landed on her,” said an officer from Vakola police station.
Police officials called for a crane to lift the truck and after an hour, the body was extricated.
“The truck driver Bansilal Pal (27) was arrested under sections 279 (rash and negligent driving) and 304 A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC,” said the police officer. The driver was later granted bail on the same day.
Her daughter Sandra Regal said, “I got to know of the tragedy while in Dubai through a text message sent by my uncle and rushed to Mumbai. My mom was taking care of my five-year-old daughter who is now constantly asking about her.”u00a0u00a0
