According to Crime Branch officers of Unit XI, Lakshmi Benbansi and her brother-in-law Ravindranath Gupta (44) were arrested on Saturday from Malad railway station after Ramzanali Khan (35) filed an FIR against the two for
kidnapping him and looting Rs 25,000 and his mobile phone.

On November 15, Khan in his complaint to the police had said that two days before, Lakshmi and Gupta accosted him in Malwani, bundled him in an auto rickshaw, and looted his mobile and money. After dropping him off at a distance, they fled.

Khan, however, lied to the police saying that he did not know the accused, cops said.

The investigating officers began tracing the calls Khan had received on the day of the alleged crime.

"We found a number that was Lakshmi's. We traced the call and pinpointed her location to be Malad station, from where we arrested her," said Chinmaji Adhav, assistant police inspector of Crime Branch Unit XI.

But the officers were in for a surprise when Lakshmi told them why she had resorted to the crime, miring Khan in a counter allegation of harassment.

Obscene calls
As per her statement, on July 7, Khan called her saying he got her number from a public toilet and wanted to have sex with her. Thinking it was a prank call, Lakshmi had dismissed it. But for the next two months, Khan called her daily. Lakshmi works as a salesgirl and has given her number to several people for business, she said.

After Khan's relentless calls, Lakshmi blocked his number. But the new cell she bought after losing her previous one did not have the call block facility. In October, Khan began with his obscene calls again. This time, Lakshmi told her brother-in-law.

The two then made a plan to teach Khan a lesson. She invited him to have 'free sex' with her, and called him to Malwani near the cremation ground and committed the alleged crime. The two have been handed over to the Malwani police.

"They were about to take him to the police station but Khan begged them to let him go. The duo then looted Khan and left him there," said Senior Inspector Raghunath Dalvi.

"At present, we have arrested the woman and Gupta under Sections 363, 392, and 34 if the IPC. However, we will investigate to find out whether the complainant made lewd calls to the girl. The woman should have come to us instead of kidnapping and looting Khan," said another police officer from Malwani police station.
