Woman shot dead by lover in front of her 4-year-old
Killer was known to victim's spouse as both were truck drivers; woman went shopping with her daughter when accused fired single shot into the back of her head and fled
An alleged extramarital affair cost a housewife her life on a busy road in Sewri on Wednesday evening when a man she knew fired a shot at her and escaped, and the blaring music and fireworks due to the ongoing festivities served in muffling the sound of the gunshot.
Shamina Khan, a 27-year-old housewife and mother of four kids, was out shopping with her four-year-old daughter when her alleged lover Abbas alias Bihari approached from behind and fired a single shot into the back of her head.
Though there were several people present on the road and groups were heading for the visarjan ceremony, the incident went unnoticed because of the din.
Shamina’s daughter witnessed her collapsing at the spot and rushed to her grandmother’s house nearby for help. Meanwhile, pedestrians managed to get Shamina into a taxi by the time her mother reached the spot. According to the police, Shamina was alive for a while after she was shot and told her mother that Abbas was the gunman. When she was wheeled into JJ Hospital however, doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Incidentally, the victim’s husband Karim Khan and the accused are friends and both are truck drivers.
Karim said, “My daughter thought that her mother was hit by a stone from behind. As there was a lot of noise due to visarjan, the locals were slow to realise what had happened. My daughter went to Shamina’s mother’s house for help. While she was being taken to hospital in a taxi, she told her mother that Abbas shot her and ran away, after which she fell unconscious. These were her last words.”
A police officer from Sewri police station said, “Doctors removed a single bullet from her head during the autopsy. She was semi-conscious after she was shot and died on the way to the hospital.”
Commenting on the alleged extramarital affair, Karim said, “People say many things, but I personally don’t know anything about it. I know Abbas very well, and I cannot even imagine that he has done this.”
ACP Dilip Waghmare of the Sewri police station said that a case has been registered against Abbas under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
“He is still at large and we will nab him shortly. The victim and her family members are known to the accused. It seems to be a case of an extramarital affair,” he said.
The bullet removed from the victim’s head has been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory, Kalina. The police are awaiting the report to ascertain the type and calibre of weapon used in the murder.
