Women in Gorai live in fear of serial molester
Cops nab 32-yr-old abuser after over 10 women from his colony file complaints; say they fear he'll be bailed out and come back to exact vengeance
A 32-year-old man was arrested by the Borivli police for harassing several women of a Gorai housing colony he himself is a resident of.
The accused was arrested on Friday afternoon after women from the colony — who have been suffering from his abuse for a year — finally rallied the courage to approach the police station to demand strict action. The accused will be produced in court today.
In the past, four non-cognisable (NC) complaints were registered against the accused, Manjit Tilak, but each time he was released after being given a warning.
Yesterday, more than 11 women went to the Borivli police station and registered their protest against the accused by filing NCs.
One of the victims said, “Whenever we pass by the road, he uses very abusive language. He even spits at us. Once he assaulted some children in the area. But he was especially a terror for women. Sometimes, he blocks our way and then uses utterly filthy language.”
Another victim said, “We have made several complaints against him at the Borivli police station, but he is always released with a warning.
We therefore demand that he should be arrested and punished. He has been harassing us for one year. Several women in the area are terrified of him.”
Sub-Inspector Umesh Sawant of the Borivli police station said, “The accused Tilak has been charged under Section 509 [word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman] of the IPC. He will be produced in the Borivli court on Saturday. He says that he is a businessman, but we have to verify whether that is true.”
Another victim said, “He may have been arrested, but I fear that after he is released on bail, he’ll come back to exact revenge on us.”
