Police register complaints after a mentally-disabled woman, a Dadar traffic constable, and students at a Matunga school suffered sexual abuse and violence

Women raped, molested in three separate incidents in Mumbai

All the raging protests and promises from the authorities did nothing to protect girls and women in the city from suffering sexual violence in three separate incidents. In Ulhasnagar, a mentally-disabled girl was raped by a labourer. A lady traffic constable posted in Dadar registered a complaint of molestation against an Air India employee. And a Dadar-based gymnastics teacher was accused of molesting one of his students.

Nabbed: Udayraj Tiwari, 47, accused of raping a mentally-challenged woman in Ulhasnagar, was arrested by the police

Victim of rape
Were it not for a passer-by, the man who raped a mentally-challenged 25-year-old would have gotten away with it. When Anand Sharma was passing by the Shahar Fatak flyover on Tuesday night, he noticed 47-year-old Udayraj Satishchandra Tiwari forcing himself upon Sonal (name changed) and ran to get help. With the assistance of local rickshaw union workers, he overpowered Tiwari and handed him over to the police.
According to police, Sharma witnessed Tiwari assaulting Sonal on the staircase to the flyover. He rushed to seek help and ran into Pinky Bhullar, the head of the local rickshaw union. The two, accompanied by a dozen of Bhullar’s companions, hurried to the staircase, where they found the accused sexually assaulting Sonal. They thrashed Tiwari, and handed him over to the police.

Speaking to MiD DAY, Bhullar said, “A person who later introduced himself as Anand Sharma came down from the road over-bridge and alerted us about the situation.”

It was only after they had turned the accused in that Bhullar realised that Sonal was mentally disabled. “I was informed that she would be taken to a specialty hospital in Badlapur for treatment,” he added.

Police inspector Mahindra Chavan said, “At first, we were unable to understand what the girl was saying. She seemed to be speaking in a sign language. Then she managed to utter a few syllables in Tamil. We called a local idli vendor to translate for us. It was obvious that she had been sexually assaulted.” Police have sent the victim to Ulhasnagar Central Hospital for medical examination. According to police, Tiwari, who works at a buffalo shed, has been arrested and charged under section 376 (punishment for rape) of the IPC.

Man molests cop
The spike in complaints against molestation seems to have failed in deterring an Air India staffer, who molested a woman traffic constable while she was on duty.

The constable approached the Matunga police and registered an FIR against Arvind Wagh. According to her complaint, Wagh, an employee of Air India, got into an argument with her after she forced him to halt his car at Dadar TT. He got out of his car and deliberately touched her where her nameplate was pinned, she said.

Teacher arrested
A gymnastics teacher at Sushuvan School in Matunga was arrested by the Matunga police on charges of outraging the modesty of a woman, criminal intimidation and causing hurt. According to the complaint, he would fondle the privates of his female students.

Ganesh Jagannath Bhise, who works at the school located on Shraddhanand Marg, was picked up after the school principal complained against his behaviour. He had been sacked from his job by then. Police have arrested him and he is remanded in police custody till January 2.u00a0
