Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has triggered yet another controversy with his latest remark on marital contract where he said a woman is suppose to do household chores and a man is contract bound to then protect her.

Bhagwat earlier was in the eye of a storm over his remark that rapes happen in India and not Bharat, indicating that rapes are urban issues even though India reports majority of the sexual assault on women from villages.

Translated, what he said in Indore on Saturday at an RSS function, on the marital contract: “Marriage is a social contract where a man under theory of contract is to take care of a wife and protect her so long she looks after household chores and satisfy the man.”

Bhagwat purportedly said that if a woman fails to honour her duties she can be disowned by the man and even the woman can disown the husband if the latter fails to do his duty.u00a0The BJP later came out to defend the RSS chief.

“His comments should be seen and understood in its entirety, he was referring to India’s sanskar (tradition) where respect for women occupies a pride of place,” BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

RSS spokesperson Ram Madhav said, “The statement of RSS chief should be taken in proper perspective. He (Bhagwat) has already demanded strict punishment for rapists and even called for death penalty if required.”
