More often than not, children are pressurised into concentrating only on their studies by their tuition teachers. Nevertheless, Yash Jamgade of St Xavier’s, Borivali is among the lucky few to have found a teacher who encourages him to focus on both studies and football in equal measure.

And the Class X student certainly has not disappointed so far, scoring three goals in four matches in the Mumbai Schools Sports Association U-16 Division II competition so far.

Jamgade played a crucial role yesterday, scoring the lone goal that helped St Xavier’s beat Arya Vidya Mandir (BKC) at Azad Maidan.

To his disappointment, Jamgade missed the entire MSSA season last year as he found it difficult to juggle between school and tuition classes. But Aarti Mishra, his tuition teacher, has played an important role in helping the youngster find a middle ground.

“Last year, since my parents were worried about my studies, they put me in a coaching class. The tutors there never allowed me to join the school football team,” said Jamgade.

“This year I joined Aarti Mam’s class and when she came to know I am good at football, she spoke to my parents and asked them to allow me to join the school team. She assured them that she would take care of my studies.”

Prior to 2012, Jamgade had been a part of his school’s team from class V and his services were missed sorely when he opted out of the side. “Last year we missed him a lot. He had always been consistent for us. I hope he can excel this year,” St Xavier’s coach Xavier Pinto said.
