Police have arrested a 24-year-old man who passed lewd comments and made vulgar gestures towards a Bandra-based woman.

On Saturday evening, when the victim was near her building, the accused approached her, held her hands and made obscene remarks. When the woman’s husband, who had witnessed the incident, intervened, the accused assaulted him. The accused, Mohammad Sheikh, has been sent to police custody.

According to the 23-year-old victim — a working professional — the accused had been passing lewd comments at her and also making vulgar gestures on several occasions. However, the woman was afraid to approach her husband. The victim added that whenever she was on her way to work or returning home, Sheikh would be waiting for her in the neighbourhood.

On Saturday evening, when the woman was on her way back to her building after some shopping, the accused approached her. Sheikh caught hold of her hand and again passed indecent remarks. The victim’s husband, who was returning home from office at the time, witnessed the incident.

According to Nirmal Nagar police, the husband then approached Sheikh and questioned him. Instead of leaving the spot, Sheikh started arguing with him. A scuffle ensued and Sheikh then allegedly assaulted the victim’s husband. He even hit the woman when she tried to intervene. Sheikh then escaped from the scene.

Senior inspector Ramesh Khankale of Nirmal Nagar police station said, “Sheikh has been arrested under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman). He has been sent to police custody. It is surprising that no one from the locality tried to intercede at any point.”u00a0
