'Manjummel Boys' director: 'I am very open to remakes and reinterpretations'

Chidambaram recently appeared on the IMDb original series ‘On The Scene’ to discuss his newly released adventure-thriller directorial, Manjummel Boys. The movie is based on a true incident from 2006 and revolves around a group of friends from a small town called Manjummel near Kochi, who decide to take a vacation in Kodaikanal. The director shared interesting insights about the movie, the camaraderie between the cast, the most challenging day on the sets, and much more. When asked to describe the most challenging day on the sets of Manjummel Boys, the director said, “We were shooting in a high-altitude place, which is cold, and we are coastal people. Every day was hard; we had to wake up very early. When we had permission to shoot in the real Guna caves, our timing to shoot there was from 5 am to 9 am. We had to finish shooting by 9 am and get out before the tourists and the public arrived. So that was a hard part, and every day we had to take all the equipment and the crew down the caves, which is a very dangerous place. There were a lot of holes here and there. If you don’t know the exact path, it can be fatal. There was a lot of crowd control, continuity of the background actors, plus rain, and we had to be wet in that climate so early in the morning.” When asked to narrate a story from the sets that nobody knows about yet, Chidambaram replied, “I would say that the monkey skull that we show in the film was actually obtained when I went into the Guna cave for the first time. It almost looks like a human skull. It’s pretty terrifying. Actually, Kamal (Haasan) sir also got a monkey skull from Guna cave. And that exact skull is used by him in Hey Ram. There is a shot in the movie where three monkey skulls are placed, and that skull comes from Guna.” When asked if the director would consider remaking Manjummel Boys in other languages after its huge success, he remarked, “There will be a bunch of boys in every corner of the world who will end up doing something like this, and they’ll get rescued. Friendship and love are very universal things. It’s a real story, so I don’t know how it will be received. If it’s entirely fictional, will it receive as much acceptance as it is getting right now? That also I am not very sure about, but yeah, I am very open to remakes and reinterpretations. Yeah, I think that should go on its own.”

Ram Charan Birthday 2024: Adorable statements made by wife Upasana Konidela

Ram Charan knows how to balance and spend time with his family. He is not only a superstar but a doting husband, a dutiful son, a big brother, and a father. Playing all the roles so beautifully is not an easy task, especially for an actor but Ram Charan surely knows how to do it and has been giving his fans family goals. They welcome a daughter - Klin Kaara on June 20, 2023.  As he celebrates his 39th birthday on March 27, here's a look at the times his wife Upasana Konidela spoke about him to the press.  Upasana told Hindustan Times that she was happy being Ram's shadow while he hogs the spotlight. She said, "They say behind every successful man there is a woman. When he is shining, it's great to be the shadow, and when I shine, he is secure enough to be mine." Given how Ram and Upasana hail from different backgrounds, the former was initially uncomfortable with the actor's intimate scenes on screen. In an interview with Galatta Ritz she shared, “Like every woman, I’ve sometimes asked him if he needed to do certain scenes with heroines. I’m like, ‘Come on, what is this?’ But he’s like, ‘Please understand, this is my profession and this is what happens’. He explained the technicalities and now everything is fine. Initially, I didn’t understand; we came from two different worlds. But there’s no one he has better chemistry with than me, he looks the best with me." Prithviraj Sukumaran in The Goat Life

The Goat Life: Here's everything you need to know about this real life story

Life transforms into a master alchemist when it presents an insurmountable challenge to a select few ordinary individuals, who then evolve into an extraordinary breed of warriors, etching their names in human history.  Najeeb, the protagonist of Aadujeevitham, has emerged as a beacon of inspiration for countless souls far beyond the borders of God's own Country, Kerala. The film directed by Blessy has been in the making for 16 years. Blessy has been Actor Prithviraj Sukumaran who plays the lead role has also been associated with the project from the beginning.  The highly anticipated film 'The Goat Life' (Aadujeevitham), starring Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead role, which is based on his autobiographical book written by Benyamin, is set to hit the screens this Thursday (March 28, 2024). As the film approaches the release date, we are drawn closer to the extraordinary journey of Najeeb, the real-life inspiration behind the story. Najeeb endured unimaginable suffering as he spent two years in a desolate desert, devoid of any human contact except for his cruel employer who subjected him to torment. Struggling with the lack of basic necessities, he had no spare clothes to change into and single-handedly tended to a herd of 700 goats. Gradually, he lost faith in his own humanity and began to identify himself as one of the goats.  Najeeb, like many uneducated individuals from Kerala, fell victim to the deceitful promises of overseas employment. Despite his innocent nature, he found himself trapped in a gruelling and brutal job upon reaching the deserts in 1992. His treatment was inhumane, enduring physical abuse and deprivation of proper sustenance. For two long years, he was only provided with a single set of clothing and was unable to bathe. His daily food consisted solely of dry Kuboos, which he had to moisten with goat milk in order to consume. Unfortunately, the milk from the goats, living in unsanitary conditions, often carried a foul odour, further worsening his already dire situation. Nevertheless, Najeeb persevered with the sole desire to survive. After a couple of years of misery and melancholy, he had a chance to break out free, but it wasn’t so easy. Experience those moments that gave him unfading scars, pain and finally the road to freedom. What’s going to be the emotional lump in the throats of audiences are the portions, where Najeeb left his wife when she was 8 months pregnant, and didn’t know if he had a son or daughter for the next couple of years. The crew assures that audiences will be taken for an emotional roller-coaster experience that will give lump in throats and smile on faces as they walk out of the theatres with a sweetest message “Hope is a Good Thing”.  To embody the role of Najeeb, actor Prithviraj, who agreed to be a part of the film in 2008, had to undergone extreme transformation. The idea was that I looked like somebody who does not have access to enough food, and was starving most of the time. The only way I could do that is to actually adopt that process, which means that my transformation was almost entirely based on fasting. At times, I used to fast for up to 72 hours. I would drink water and black coffee, but nothing else,” said that actor who lost 31 kgs and went through the process twice as the film's shoot was halted in between due to the pandemic.  'The Goat Life' is produced by Visual Romance, and is directed by Blessy, based on the novel written by Benyamin. AR Rahman is composing music for this masterpiece, which has cinematography handled by Sunil KS, and editing by Sreekar Prasad. The star-cast comprises Prithviraj Sukumaran, Amala Paul, Jimmy Jean-Louis, KR Gokul, Talib Al Balushi and Rik.

Here’s why Ram Charan appeared barefoot during RRR promotions

Telugu heartthrob, Ram Charan, has a massive fan following. After the release of RRR, he has become a pan-India crush. There have been several occasions during RRR promotions when Ram Charan was spotted barefoot by the paparazzi at the airport. Do you know the reason behind this? On Ram Charan’s birthday, here’s an interesting fact behind all his barefoot appearances during RRR promotions. Ram Charan and his father, superstar Chiranjeevi, are devotees of Lord Ayyappa. On an annual basis, they pay a visit to the Sabarimala Temple in Kerala to offer prayers. However, before visiting the temple, the Zanjeer actor observes a 41-day fast. It is a part of the Ayyappa Deeksha ritual. As per the tradition, devotees who follow Ayyappa Diksha before their winter visit to the Sabarimala Temple wear only black clothes and walk barefoot. They're not permitted to shave their beards or cut their hair during this period. The person observing this ritual has to sleep on the floor and indulge in no worldly pleasures.           View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Manav Manglani (@manav.manglani) In a previous statement on observing Ayyappa Deeksha, Ram Charan said, "What I learned from Deeksha is money and luxury are not important in life. One should be obedient and sincere to God. That is the way to find peace and peace of mind. Ayyappa Deeksha will offer us a peaceful mind. I can still remember my Yatra in the peaceful weather. My advice for youth and businessmen is to follow this Deeksha that brings peace of mind and also gives us balance and strength to achieve our Goals. Lord Ayyappa and Deeksha saved me from an accident during the Goa shooting schedule of Racha." Workwise, Ram Charan was last seen in SS Rajamouli's RRR. He did a cameo in his father's film Acharya. Ram Charan featured in the song Yentamma in Salman Khan's Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan. His next release will be Shankar's Gamechanger with Kiara Advani. The actor has also kicked off the shoot of 'RC 16,' and a puja ceremony was held on the sets. The puja ceremony was attended not only by the film's cast and crew but also by megastar Chiranjeevi and Ram Charan's wife, Upasana Kamineni Konidela.

Shruti Haasan and Kamal Haasan

Of love and its complications

Released yesterday, Shruti Haasan’s latest Tamil composition is special for more reasons than one—apart from the fact that it serves as an extension of her work as an independent artiste in the regional music space, it sees her join hands with her superstar father, Kamal Haasan, who comes on board as lyricist. “I first conceptualised this song as an English number. I wanted to write a song about the ups and downs of love, and I felt that it should have a Tamil chorus. My dad’s producing partner believed that the entire song should be in Tamil. When we started to think of a lyricist for the composition, he said, ‘You should ask your father’. I wasn’t sure that was an option, but having him [Kamal] on board was an honour. He is one of the most gifted lyricists [of our time]. Subsequently, I started to work on the music video,” shares Shruti of the track, Inimel, which translates to ‘from now on’.  While the composition had been crafted before she approached her father, Shruti reveals that she made a few tweaks to “retain appa’s style of writing”. “His style enhanced the song. My biggest takeaway from working with him is that he is not someone who settles after [writing] one or two [versions]. He will give me 10 options for the lyrics. That level of excitement for the art is something I always find inspiring.” Inimel, she reveals, speaks of modern love and its complications. “It’s about being comfortable in continually searching for love, and knowing it’s a bit of a delusion. I wanted to create a moment in the lyrics and visuals [with which I could show] an entire relationship in four minutes. This song is a continuation of my celebration of indie music on a large scale, and in my regional language.”

However, the teaser of Indian 2 was released in November and generated quite the buzz.  In a recent interview with The Hindu, Haasan was quizzed about the status of his upcoming projects and his absence from the big screen in 2023.  He said, “We cannot speed-up production because quantity doesn't matter, quality matters. I have completed Indian 2 and 3. Post-production is happening on Indian 2 and we start post-production on Indian 3 maybe after we finish this. Thug Life shooting is starting very soon. I have done a guest role in a film called Kalki 2898 AD.” About Indian 2:  'Indian 2' releases on April 11, 2024. The movie features Kajal Aggarwal, Rakul Preet Singh, Siddharth, Vivek, Kalidas Jayaram, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Guru Somasundaram and Gulshan Grover in crucial roles. The vigilante action-thriller is co-produced by Subaskaran and Udhayanidhi Stalin, under the banners of Lyca Productions and Red Giant Movies, respectively. The movie's digital rights have been acquired by Netflix for a staggering ₹200 crore, according to a News 18 report. About Kalki 2898 AD:  Recently, present at the Synapse 2024 event in Gurgaon, ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ director Nag Ashwin spoke about his upcoming epic science-fiction entertainer and the timeline of events depicted in the film, along with the power of technology. Nag Ashwin said, “I just wish definitely that there was more tech to help us make this film, like three-four years back when we were in preproduction. We are creating this new world like I am just looking at this picture right now on the screen, and all these different words that we are trying to create, we work with so many different concept artists and giving prompts, obviously, again, in a very personal, one on one sort of way, and try to give references and build this world. For example, our film starts in Mahabharat and it ends in 2898. That’s the title of the film, it’s called ‘Kalki 2898 AD’. It spans 6,000 years of distance and time. So trying to create worlds that are there here, imagining what it could be like, still keeping it Indian and not make it look like a blade runner.” Directed by Nag Ashwin and bankrolled by Vyjayanthi Movies, ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ is a multilingual film, a mythology-inspired sci-fi spectacle set in the future. The film is set to hit the screens pan-India on May 9, 2024.
