The concept of quiet luxury is all about appreciating the finer things in life without the need to show off or make a statement.

Mid-Day Premium The ultimate fashion guide to embracing quiet luxury with Indian attire

Quiet luxury is a trend across fashion and lifestyle that has gained massive popularity across the globe. It refers to a refined and understated approach to luxury, where the focus is on quality, craftsmanship, and timeless elegance rather than flashy logos or overt branding. The concept of quiet luxury is all about appreciating the finer things in life without the need to show off or make a statement. It's a subtle yet powerful way of expressing one's personal style and taste. If you are wondering, how can you communicate sophistication and refinement through your OOTD, we’ve got fashion experts to help you out.  10 ways to style quiet luxury When asked what quiet luxury means to him, content creator Rishabh Chawla shares, “Styling quiet luxury is like curating your wardrobe with pieces that effortlessly exude sophistication, without needing to scream for attention. It’s about cultivating a refined aesthetic that speaks volumes in its simplicity and elegance, without being overly ostentatious.” Stylist, model, and fashion creator Ruhaanee Hiran agrees as she tells us about the importance of minimalism in fashion, and how it’s the central aspect of quiet luxury. Below, the two fashion enthusiasts share ten tips to get you started.  Also Read: Fashion pundits dissect the ‘Quiet Luxury’ fashion trend, share tips to ace it Quality over fast fashion First and foremost, quality reigns supreme. When selecting items for your quiet luxury ensemble, opt for pieces that are meticulously crafted and built to last. Whether it’s a beautifully tailored blazer or a timeless leather bag, prioritise quality materials and craftsmanship. These pieces not only look better, but also stand the test of time, and can turn out to be worthy investments in your wardrobe. Take your fabrics seriously Luxurious fabrics elevate the quiet luxury aesthetic, adding a tactile dimension to your ensemble. Soft cashmere, smooth silk, and fine wool not only feel luxurious against the skin but also exude an air of sophistication. Incorporating these premium materials into your wardrobe enhances the overall look and feel of your outfit, adding a touch of indulgence to everyday dressing.  Well-balanced outfit When it comes to putting together an outfit, there are many factors to consider. One important aspect is the balance and proportion of each piece. A well-balanced outfit will typically include a mix of fitted and more relaxed items that complement each other. Experimenting with layering can also add depth and interest to your overall look.  Fit is a hit Fit plays a crucial role in achieving the quiet luxury aesthetic. Clothes that fit well not only flatter your figure but also enhance your overall appearance. Whether it's a perfectly tailored suit or a pair of well-fitted jeans, pay attention to the cut and silhouette to ensure a sleek and polished look. Investing in alterations, if necessary, can make a world of difference in achieving the perfect fit.  Keep it simple silly Simplicity is the guiding principle of quiet luxury. Instead of flashy logos or trendy embellishments, focus on clean lines, classic silhouettes, and understated details. Neutral tones like black, white, beige, and navy serve as the foundation of this aesthetic, offering endless versatility and effortless sophistication. By keeping it simple, you allow the inherent beauty of each piece to shine through, creating a cohesive and polished look.  Also Read: Can’t pick the right lipstick? Here’s an expert guide to your perfect shade Accessorise right In addition to clothing items, accessories also play a crucial role in completing the perfect outfit. When selecting accessories, it's best to keep things simple and avoid going overboard. Small earrings or delicate necklaces can enhance your outfit, while a thin belt or silk scarf can add some flair without overwhelming it. Soft makeup and hair Regarding hair and makeup, it's best to opt for a natural and effortless look. Soft waves or a neat bun can create a polished yet relaxed appearance, and neutral makeup tones can highlight your natural beauty without being too distracting.  Confident strides Confidence is key when it comes to pulling off any outfit. Wearing your clothes with pride and carrying yourself with confidence can make a significant difference in how you look and feel. And don't forget to add a touch of good perfume to give you that extra boost!  Scent it up Don’t overlook the power of scent in styling quiet luxury. A signature fragrance adds a personal and distinctive touch to your ensemble, leaving a lasting impression wherever you go. Choose a sophisticated and subtle scent that complements your style and enhances your overall presence.  Classic shoes Lastly, when it comes to shoes, it's best to choose classic styles in neutral colours that complement your outfit without overpowering it. Loafers or ballet flats can be a great choice for many outfits, but the specific shoe you choose will depend on the rest of your outfit and your personal style preferences.   How to elevate Indian attire to align with quiet luxury? Although quiet luxury is a Western import, its implementation in the Indian context can be exciting to fashion lovers. After all elegance, quality, and minimalism are all aspects of a diverse range of clothing. “India has a rich heritage of craftsmanship in textiles, including weaving, embroidery, and printing techniques like block printing and hand-painting.  Quiet luxury can be manifested through the appreciation and promotion of these traditional crafts, which showcase meticulous attention to detail and exquisite artistry,” poses Sarabjeet Saluja, founder and CEO of Saundh, an everyday affordable-luxury label inspired by stories that shape our artistic heritage. Below, he lists five things to consider when trying to channel the quiet luxury aesthetic:   Homegrown craftsmanshipWe must not forget about India's diverse range of natural fibres such as cotton, silk, linen, and wool which can contribute to the concept of quiet luxury. Many homegrown labels have established the concept of quiet luxury through their meticulous designs, detailed craftsmanship and use of high-grade textiles. While they narrate a colourful story, there’s a sense of calmness in each product, making it a vivid example of quiet luxury.    Luxury can be comfortable and durableLuxury is not just about aesthetics; it's also about how you feel. Prioritise comfort in your choices, whether it's selecting soft, luxurious fabrics for your clothing and bedding or creating cosy spaces in your home where you can relax and unwind. Choose well-made clothing crafted from materials like fine cotton, silk, linen, or wool that offer both comfort and durability.  Also Read: Wedding edit: Why more number of brides are switching to bridal sneakers Colours are key Colours play a significant role in setting the tone and mood of a space or an outfit. When it comes to quiet luxury, sophisticated colour palettes are often preferred. You could experiment with the colours of the season for a more elevated look.   Be mindful of silhouettes It's often the little details that elevate an experience from ordinary to extraordinary. Silhouettes refer to the overall shape or outline of a garment or object. Focus on simplicity and understated elegance in your choices. In the context of quiet luxury, silhouettes often prioritise simplicity and timelessness.   Let the big labels and trends be Quiet luxury is very tricky as it can be often confused with big labels and names - it is also about comfort and personal expression. It’s very easy to get influenced by our favourite actors or designers or models but you must find your style.

She is special: Anamika Khanna on Shanaya Kapoor being her showstopper at LFW’24

Anamika Khanna of AK-OK showcased her Spring Summer ’24 collection on Friday at the Lakme Fashion Week X FDCI 2024 in Mumbai’s Jio World Convention Centre. The designer’s collection was all about being fearless, bold, unapologetic, classy and sassy.    The AK-OK collection is inspired by the adventures of a travelling biker of Orissa's Bonda Tribe. On being asked why she chose an ethnic group of India as the central theme for the collection, Khanna says, “Why not? I am a proud Indian. My country inspires me in everything that I do. The idea for this collection came about when I met a biker from Orissa who was on a tour. I started researching, went into the depth of the cultural outfits worn by the Bonda tribe and realised how beautiful it all was. That’s when I thought why not converge the tribe’s ethnic outfits with my encounter with the biker.”  Khanna’s AK-OK’s collections are known to be rooted in India's vibrant culture using weaves and motifs that celebrate nature. Taking the brand’s signature approach one step further, the designer brought to life Bonda colours, motifs and embroideries in ensembles that are perfect for a night out in the city.  Anamika Khanna (left), Shanaya Kapoor (centre) and Mira Kapoor (right) dazzle in the latest AK-OK outfits. The collection is grounded in denim with a palette that includes quintessential whites, ivories, and blacks expanding over to a range of prints and bolder colours like red and pink. With rich detail at work, the collection combined thick thread work embroidery inspired by biker studs to reinvent the idea of urban wear.  Khanna tells Mid-day.com, “The entire process of putting the collection together was sheer madness.” Speaking about the creative challenges, she says, “During the process, I did have my share of challenges, I was like, ‘What am I doing,’ because I was trying to put two worlds together. But once I managed to capture the essence of the culture, it all fell in the right place, it became seamless. I love the fact that I could take something from one end of the world and mix it with the other end of the world, and let this collection be from India yet be international.”            View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by AK-OK (@akok.in) This was well reflected when the models walked the ramp wearing traditional, ethnic motifs and embroidery in urban patterns making the ensembles a splendid sight for the eyes. To add more spice to the already hit show, Shanaya Kapoor, the showstopper, dazzled and slayed the biker look put together by the designer.   Shanaya's outfit featured a white shirt dress with black and yellow studded patterns. The full sleeves and uneven hem elevated the whole look. The outfit was accessorised with layered gold chain necklaces and statement bracelets. She completed the look with black boots embellished with gold blocks.  She opted for a make-up look that made her look even more glamorous. Nude eyeshadow, winged eyeliner, rosy cheeks with luminous highlighter and nude lipstick blended perfectly with her overall outfit. Her hair was open and styled in soft curls.            View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by AK-OK (@akok.in) On Shanaya being the showstopper, Khanna tells us, “She is special. Her energy, spark, and vibrancy, carefree spirit is unmatchable. Her personality and the vibe she exudes go perfectly well with the vibe and nature of my collection.”  Anamika Khanna herself dazzled in a white collared shirt and statement denim pants. She was seen twinning with Mira Kapoor who graced the show with her presence to extend love towards the designer. During a chat with the press, Mira Kapoor revealed that Khanna had designed her bridal outfit and that she blindly trusts the designer with her outfits for events.  With another successful collection launch of AK-OK, Anamika Khanna will now be busy with other projects she has lined up. “Many exciting things are coming up. New stores coming up, new accessory lines and lots of other new launches,” she tells Mid-day.com.  ALSO WATCH: Lakme Fashion Week X FDCI 2024: Sustainability takes centre stage on day two

Giving a taste of luxe life, the table featured varieties of cheese infused with refreshinghly different flavours such as truffle shiitake, cranberry pistachio, bacon cheddar and salmon cheese

Lakme Fashion Week 2024: Fashion Week is also about feeding the fashionistas

The five-day Lakme Fashion Week 2024 x FDCI may be tagged as the 'Kumbh Mela' of style, bringing together the best by almost 60 upcoming and seasoned designers. But good food also played a wholesome role on the first day (Wednesday, March 13). Day One of the fashion fiesta began with Gen Next designers Kriti Greta Singhee, Rosani, Shimona Agarwal and The Terra Tribe, who unveiled their debut collection. The curtains came down on the day after seasoned designer Rajesh Pratap Singh showcased his collection on the Mahalaxmi Race Course, giving a regal spin to polo wear. Not only did his garments win people's hearts, but the 'grazing table' set up by the young chef and food impresario Manpreet Dhody's I’m Wholesome shared the limelight.           View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Lakmē Fashion Week (@lakmefashionwk)   Giving a taste of luxe life, the table featured varieties of cheese infused with refreshinghly different flavours such as truffle shiitake, cranberry pistachio, bacon cheddar and salmon cheese -- all developed by Dhody and her team. Ditching the calories, fashionistas swarmed at the beautifully decorated table, which also served lip-smacking small fusion bites, notably peri peri bhutta tarts and hashbrown chaat. The table did not disappoint the non-vegetarians too as they got to dig into smoked salmon canapes and sundried tomato chicken. What caught this correspondent's fancy was the desserts, each one topped the other. Dhody and her team kept the designer's sensibilities in mind and served melt-in-the-mouth South Indian coffee mascarpone shrew, and chocolate and strawberry nibble cake, among others. Also Read: Bill Gates traces nostalgic tech journey with a CD post on Instagram It was the coffee mascarpone shrew that turned out to be the showstopper on the table curated by Dhody, who said, "We have kept their flavours simple but presented them in a stylish way." It doesn't take much time to make the food, Dhody added, but it is the "styling" that does. I’m Wholesome is just a little over three years old, but has made a mark in the industry by curating tables for top brands such as Gucci and Chanel, as well as Bollywood personalities like the designer Manish Malhotra and Hrithik Roshan. The company has three offerings -- the grazing table, gifting hampers and a cooking studio. Dhody said the gifting hampers are made for "everyone", as the range starts from Rs 875 and goes up to Rs 10,000. "You don't want to deprive someone on a budget," Dhody told IANS. "I want to satisfy someone who can only spare Rs. 800 per hamper and also somebody who is prepared to spend up to Rs 5,000, or even more." The real bucks, though, come from the grazing table, which starts from Rs 50,000 and goes up to over Rs10 lakh -- and more. How much was the table laid out for the show priced at? Dhody's replied instantly, it was "expensive". Also Read: How Mumbai’s road queens blaze trails with biking adventures Of course, the food was the belle of the ball, but to flush down all the yumminess, there were drinks by The Singleton, serving up cocktails. The Turfy G&T, made with dry gin paired with lemongrass, lime, soda and tonic, turned out to be the right antidote to Mumbai's sweltering heat. The spotlight, though, was on the Tropictini, which almost everyone wanted to grab. The drink can be described as a regular Espresso Martini, but the secret 'wow' ingredient was the coconut syrup stirred with a large serving of vodka. Fashionistas clinked their glasses of 'Tropictini during the polo match ahead of Rajesh Pratap's finale show. Wait, there was more. For whisky lovers, there was the Old Fashioned but with a local twist given by anjeer (figs) and aromatic bitters. JJ Valaya on Day 2 of sustainable fashion day at Lakme Fashion Week 2024 in partnership with FDCI.

Lakme Fashion Week: Valaya gives luxury a sustainable spin by recycling plastic

Veteran fashion designer JJ Valaya gave a luxurious spin to sustainable fashion for his latest collection from his bridge-to-luxury brand JJ Valaya Kapurthala at the Lakme Fashion Week 2024 x FDCI. Valaya partnered with R|Elan for the show on the second day of the fashion week, which celebrates sustainability. The collection, which represented harmonious fusion of tradition and innovation, was made out of eco-friendly fabrics such as R|Elan Green Gold, made out of 100 per cent recycled PET bottles and innovative techniques such as Kooltex, promising style and sustainability. Valaya’s collection christened “Char” meaning “four” was loosely inspired from the travelogues of Maharaja Jagjit Singh of Kapurthala. Also Read: Lakme Fashion Week Day 1 celebrates geometry, eroticism, indie culture Valaya said that this collection is his homage to the “bygone era” of opulence and global influences. Talking about his collection, the stalwart, who has been with the industry for over three decades, said: “It is more accessible, lighter, wearable and to get something out which a lot more people can wear, that’s the ethos.” “It is always a privilege to be a part of a movement… Sustainability is the way to go. I was kind of surprised to see the kind of fabrics I saw because for something that lands up in all the wrong places and to make it into a yarn and spin it into a fabric is so versatile. Frankly, I was so surprised. I did not expect it to be so luxurious.” On how long it took to make the collection, Valaya said the inspiration was well in place but implementation took place in the “last two months”. “Getting the fabric, developing new ones, finding the right kind of work. But I am glad we could put it together timely,” he said about the occasion wear collection, featuring sarees, kurta-pyjamas, lehengas, gala bandhs, skirts, kaftaans, free flowing dresses and mesh cover ups with monokinis, all in the shades of beige, bronze, greys, blacks and ivory. The show too saw a tad bit of star power. Actress Rasika Dugal, Kubbra Sait and Sushant Divgikar were seen attending Valaya’s show donning his creation. Launched at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the brand will make its way to the runway on 17th March at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai. Commenting on his upcoming show Rahul Mishra said, “Presenting at Lakme Fashion Week x FDCI always feels like a homecoming and this time around it’s an honour to showcase our global Easy to wear luxury brand ‘AFEW Rahul Mishra’ for the first time in India. I’m looking forward to presenting my Fall-Winter ’24 collection which draws its inspiration from the House of Lakme’s MultiSlayer Sticks that will for the wearer define a new approach to beauty, one that is personalised and sculpted to one’s face shape. "At AFEW Rahul Mishra we have always celebrated our Indian heritage, married to our international take on fashion, and collaborating with Lakme, is always special and even more so as we come together at the House of Lakme Grand Finale marking a new era in fashion and beauty, one that is inspired by nature as the ultimate sculptor.” The show will present a vision that is rooted in sculpture and definition, both in beauty and fashion, with AFEW’s Fall-Winter ’24 collection having the designer look at his constant muse i.e. nature as the ultimate sculptor and artist. Appreciating the otherwise simple natural forms for their structural personality through a sculptor’s lens, the silhouettes are envisioned in bright solid hues and graphic textures and play with geometric representations that bring to the fore the relation of stone and sculpture. The inspiration reveals itself in rigid but organic installations of natural forms that consist of vegetal and animal motifs. As a strong reference to his eight-year-old daughter’s influence on his creative endeavours, the visuals are partially influenced by the children’s story, ‘The Fox and the Star’ whose characters appear in the collection amongst other imagined structures. Lakme Fashion Week Day 1 celebrates geometry, eroticism, indie culture

Day 1 at Lakme Fashion Week 2024 was no less than a fashion frenzy. With its latest edition, GenNext designers threw the ramp open with a fresh and inclusive start on Wednesday.
