Mumbai: BMC collects Rs 2,200 crore property tax

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the richest civic body in the country, said it has collected Rs 2,213 crore through property tax in the current fiscal. In a release issued on Wednesday, it said the assessment and collection department has collected the amount, and the highest chunk of Rs 174.15 crore was collected in the K-West ward in western suburbs, followed by the S-ward (Rs 170.77 crore) and H-East ward (Rs 168.34 crore). The civic body collected Rs 9.51 crore property tax from the government-owned properties, it said. "Among the top 10 property owners whom the department pursued for collection of the tax was a private company from the S-ward in the eastern suburbs. The property tax bill of the company was Rs 49.12 crore, followed by another company from G-south ward in the city having a Rs 20.84 crore property tax bill," it said. The department is currently focusing on the recovery of large property tax bill arrears in the city and its suburbs, besides the recovery of past dues, the release said. The civic body also highlighted that continuous efforts are being made in different ways to meet the property tax collection target for the financial year 2023-24. Its 24 ward offices are continuously witnessing a heavy rush of citizens for payment of property tax, the BMC said, urging citizens to cooperate by paying their tax before the March 31 deadline. The civic facility centres in all 24 administrative wards and the BMC headquarters in Fort will remain open from 8 am to 10 pm till March 30 and till midnight on March 31 so that the property owners can pay the tax. Earlier this week, the Mumbai civic body had said that it has no plans to impose any water cut in the metropolis as sufficient water is available in reservoirs. "Due to low rainfall between June and September 2023, relatively less water is available in reservoirs, but the water supply to the city won't get affected," the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stated on Tuesday. The state government has also made additional water available for Mumbai from the reserve quota, it said. A high-level meeting was held at the civic headquarters on Tuesday to review the water supply situation of the metropolis. "The municipal administration is keeping a close eye on the available water storage in the dam," the BMC said and appealed to citizens to use water sparingly and judiciously. Mumbai gets its daily water supply from seven different lakes - Tansa, Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Tulsi, Vihar, Upper Vaitarna, and Middle Vaitarna. Most of these lakes are located on the outskirts of Mumbai and in neighbouring Thane and Nashik districts.

Meanwhile, the Shiv Sena (UBT), a constituent of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), on Wednesday released its first list of 17 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra, and said it will contest a total of 22 seats in the state. Retired Mumbai cop gets five-year jail term for molesting minor girl at hospital

A special court in Mumbai has sentenced a retired police constable to imprisonment of five years for molesting a 13-year-old girl while on duty at a hospital in suburban Mulund in 2017, reported news agency PTI. The 58-year-old retired Mumbai cop was convicted under IPC section 354 (A) (molestation) and relevant provisions of the POCSO Act by special judge Kalpana Patil on March 22. The detailed order became available on Wednesday. The accused constable was, however, acquitted for an offence committed under IPC (Indian Penal Code) section 506 for criminal intimidation, reported PTI. Relying on the testimony of the victim and other evidence, the court concluded that the prosecution had successfully proved the charge against the retired Mumbai cop for molestation. The court stated that for the charges under IPC section 506, the prosecution has to prove that the accused threatened the victim girl with injury to her reputation or property or to the person, reported PTI. From the statement of the victim girl it does not appear that there was a particular threat given by the accused which will cause alarm to the victim girl, it noted. The girl had accompanied her mother to a hospital in Mulund who was injured during a quarrel with their neighbour that occurred on the night of October 19, 2017. The woman, in her testimony, claimed after she was given first aid and medicine, it was too late in the night, so she and her daughter were waiting at the hospital when she spotted 'Police Kaksha' (police booth), reported PTI. The woman approached the cop present there and narrated the incident of the quarrel with her neighbour and asked him whether she would get any help, as per the prosecution. However, she was told to visit Bhandup police station. The woman then asked the constable whether she could sit in the police booth for some time with her minor daughter, a class 9 student, as it was late at night, reported PTI. When the woman went to attend the nature's call, the constable allegedly touched the girl inappropriately, the prosecution said. The victim started crying when she and her mother left the hospital on October 20 morning. She narrated her ordeal to her mother and told her that the constable had also threatened her not to disclose the incident, the prosecution said, reported PTI. The mother returned to the hospital and reported the incident to the medical officer who called the police and the case was registered against the accused, who was posted at the booth. The accused was arrested from the hospital immediately, reported PTI. The court relied on the testimony of the victim, and her mother, which was corroborated by doctors, a watchman of the hospital and other witnesses who saw the duo in the hospital and also in CCTV footage. More than 1,000 workers from hospitals are called for election duty

Mumbai: Doctors resist election duty summons over patient care

For the first time in the history doctors of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and JJ hospital have been summoned for election duty, before the order was rolled back for the BMC doctors. More than 500 doctors were assigned to election duty by the suburban district collector of Mumbai. Including all categories such as clerical staff and nurses, there are more than 1,000 essential service workers from the city hospitals on election duty. This led to panic among doctors, before the BMC withdrew the order following the uproar. “We cannot refuse treatment to anyone, come what may and we won’t. We are going to oppose this. We have been asked to send around 200 doctors and 600 nurses. That is most of the nursing staff,” said a senior doctor of a BMC-run hospital. The order from the suburban collector contradicts Election Commission of India rules as the latter exempts doctors from election duty. A couple of months ago, clerks were called in for training from across these hospitals. “That was about 200 just from one hospital. Now think of the magnitude, by which administration work is impacted. These are essential services,” the senior doctor said. The vacancies of doctors are around 54 per cent of a total strength of 1,546 scheduled posts in BMC hospitals. At another BMC-run hospital, one of the senior doctors called for duty and said, “If we do not oppose this now, we will also be asked to go for assembly elections and this will happen every time.” The Dean of that hospital in the city said, “Who will be responsible for any mishap due to a shortage of staff.” Why doctors asked to do this A BMC top official said, “This will hamper services but the election is sacrosanct.”  He added that BMC will try to convince the election commission but it is not in their hands.  At press time orders werecancelled by the suburban collector only for BMC doctors, nurses and other emergency services. Not for clerical staff. 500No. of doctors summoned for election duty
