Mid-Day Premium Salman Khan firing case: New suspect detained

In the Salman Khan residence firing incident, the Mumbai Crime Branch detained the third suspected person who was continuously in touch with the shooters. Vickey Kumar Gupta and Sagar Kumar Pal were in regular contact with Sagar's brother, Sonu Pal, who resides in Haryana, where both shooters received their training. The Crime Branch officers also took two individuals into custody from Pune who are suspected of selling the guns to the shooters. Sonu resides in Haryana, and some money was transferred to his family account. The accused were promised Rs 4 lakh each for the firing, and in advance, they received Rs 1 lakh each. Currently, a team is in Gujarat searching for the gun used in the firing. However, before the firing incident, the shooters parked their bike 100 metres away from Salman's Galaxy Apartment. They walked and checked the police presence, and when they saw no police jeep was outside, they used their bike to carry out the firing and escaped. A police source told mid-day, "The actor was sleeping in his bedroom when he heard the loud noise of the firing. He woke up and summoned his bodyguards to ascertain what had happened. Who then confirmed that it was indeed a firing incident. The police team deployed in the building's parking area also responded." Police absent "Salman reprimanded them about the security loopholes and questioned the absence of the police team during the firing. He expressed frustration about how the shooters managed to fire despite the security measures in place. Salman also noted the absence of the police jeep outside," the source said. Security upgraded Following the incident, the security detail of Salman Khan was upgraded, with personnel in the security convoy now equipped with two automatic guns. Mumbai police sources disclosed that gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, currently in jail, was involved in the firing through his brother. The police also suspect that the third accused, Sonu, who is Sagar’s brother, was in contact with the Bishnoi gang and providing updates on the firing. The Crime Branch suspects that Sonu was also sharing details on how to escape from the scene and what actions to take next. In the CCTV footage, the police noticed both accused surveying the area around before the firing. They noticed the absence of a police jeep and proceeded to walk towards Salman Khan, parking their bike 100 metres away.

The Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) on Thursday released its another list of candidates ahead of the Maharashtra Lok Sabha elections 2024, nominating Prakash Kadam from Satara seat and Utkarsh Rupwate from Shirdi. The VBA had earlier expressed its support for Supriya Sule of NCP (SP) for the Baramati seat in the fight against Sunetra Pawar of the Ajit Pawar-led NCP. Sule and Pawar on Thursday filed their nominations for the polls. Check below the list of VBA candidates announced on Thursday No. Constituency  Candidate 1 Satara Prashant Kadam 2 Shirdi Utkarsh Rupwate Meanwhile, Prakash Ambedkar had on Monday released the party's manifesto for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Ambedkar said if voted to power, his party will make a strategic decision not to retire contractual employees till 58 years, and it will bring a law for minimum selling price for farmers, reported PTI. Ambedkar also claimed that while the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) is being seen as an anti-Muslim law, it is also against 20 per cent of the Hindu community. By bringing in the law, the BJP is cheating Hindu voters in the country, he said. As per PTI report, the VBA chief said, "If the VBA comes to power, it will make a strategic decision not to retire contractual employees till 58 years, and it will bring a law for minimum selling price for farmers. The party will ensure free education from kindergarten to PG classes and spend 9 per cent of funds on education," he added. While interacting with the media, Prakash Ambedkar, the grandson of Dr BR Ambedkar also slammed Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, for his statement that the VBA should have allied with the Maha Vikas Aghadi in the interest of the nation and its move to contest alone will only benefit the BJP.  "Mahatma Gandhi, who fought for the backward classes, was pitted against the upper caste, and the VBA is also doing the same thing. Tushar Gandhi should support the VBA instead of criticising the party," Prakash Ambedkar had said, the news agency had earlier reported. (with PTI inputs)

LS polls: Congress accuses Shinde-led Sena of volating model code of conduct

The Congress on Thursday demanded that the candidature of all the CM Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena nominees be cancelled for violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) for allegedly using state transport buses for their poll campaign ahead of the Maharashtra Lok Sabha elections 2024, the PTI reported. According to the PTI, the Congress' state unit spokesperson Atul Londhe, in a letter to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), said action should also be taken against officers of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) for allowing the use of its buses for election campaigning. The Maharashtra Congress leader alleged that since the start of the Lok Sabha elections 2024 campaign, the ruling BJP and Shiv Sena have repeatedly violated the MCC and the Congress had filed a formal complaint about it with the Election Commission, as per the PTI. "The Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has violated the MCC by illegally displaying banners on the MSRTC buses while campaigning for the party," he said. Atul Londhe mentioned that the Election Commission's letter which has been sent to the cabinet secretaries, chief secretaries and chief executive officers of all the states banning the use of government properties and of public undertakings for campaigning, the news agency reported on Thursday. Despite the ban, MSRTC officials have allowed more than 1,000 buses to be used illegally for the election campaign of Shiv Sena candidates by allowing banners to be displayed on these buses, he claimed. The banners prominently feature photos of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar and the bow and arrow symbol of Shiv Sena, Londhe alleged. This act of the MSRTC officials is not only a clear violation of the code of conduct, but also undermines the fairness and integrity of the election process, he said. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Lok Sabha elections 2024 will be held in five phases on April 19, April 26, May 7, May 13 and May 20. The counting of votes will be held on June 4. Baramati will go to vote in phase 3 on May 7. The state, with its 48 Lok Sabha seats, is the second-largest contributor to the lower house of Parliament after Uttar Pradesh. (with PTI inputs)

Bombay HC allows victim of child marriage to get pregnancy terminated

The Bombay High Court has permitted a teenager, a victim of child marriage, to undergo medical termination of her 28-week pregnancy on the grounds of foetal abnormalities. A division bench of Justices P D Naik and N R Borkar in its order of April 12 also noted that the girl was 'HIV seropositive'. A copy of the order was made available on Thursday. The 17-year-old girl had filed a petition in HC seeking permission to get her pregnancy terminated saying scans had shown that the foetus had skeletal anomalies with the possibility of genetic abnormalities. Under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, a court nod is required to terminate a pregnancy beyond 24 weeks of gestation. The high court relied on a report submitted by the medical board of the state-run Sassoon General Hospital in Pune that recommended termination of the pregnancy as the girl is a minor and a victim of child marriage with 'HIV seropositive status'. The board in its report said the foetus also has multiple defects. The high court said it was allowing termination of pregnancy taking into account the mental and medical situation of the girl.
