Lok Sabha polls: CM Shinde-led Shiv Sena likely to get Thane, Palghar seats

Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena is likely to contest the Thane and Palghar seats in Maharashtra in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections 2024, amid its tussle with the local BJP leaders who have staked claim over these two seats, reported the PTI. The names of candidates are expected to be announced by Wednesday, as per the PTI. Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik, who represents the Ovala-Majiwada assembly constituency, party spokesperson Naresh Mhaske and former MLC Ravindra Phatak are strong contenders who are in the race for the Thane parliamentary seat, party sources said, according to the PTI. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) central leadership has asked its state leadership to rein in its claimants for the Thane seat. Thane is the home turf of Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde and it is unlikely that the party is ready to cede the coveted seat. A seat with a significant Marathi population, local factors and CM Shinde's guarantee to win the seat were factors that weighed in favour of Shiv Sena. The Thane comprises six assembly segments spanning across three satellite cities of Mumbai -- Airoli and Belapur in Navi Mumbai, Thane city, Kopri Panchpakhadi and Ovala-Majiwada and Mira Bhayandar. The Palghar seat was won by the Shiv Sena in 2019 and it will also retain this seat, the sources added. Thane and Palghar will go to polls on May 20. The ruling 'Mahayuti' alliance, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP, is yet to declare candidates for Nashik, South Mumbai, Aurangabad and Ratnagiri-Sindhudurg seats -- all won by the undivided Shiv Sena in 2019. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday said it was the responsibility of the MVA constituents to prevent any rebellion within their respective parties, a comment coming in the wake of Congress's Vishal Patil filing his nomination from the Sangli Lok Sabha seat despite it being allotted to the Sena (UBT), the PTI reported. Addressing a press conference after releasing a song to promote the party's poll symbol, he said a joint manifesto of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) parties, comprising the Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) and Congress, will be released soon. HC to hear pleas against Maratha quota in June; no orders on interim relief

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday adjourned till June 13 hearing on a bunch of petitions challenging the Maharashtra government's decision to grant reservation to persons from the Maratha community. A full bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justices Girish Kulkarni and Firdosh Pooniwalla did not pass any urgent orders on the interim relief for a stay on operation of the quota sought by the petitioners. The bench clarified that as per an ad-interim order passed by a coordinate bench in March, any admission made or employment given under the quota would be subject to final outcome of these petitions. The full bench had last week commenced hearing on the petitions. On Tuesday, the court said the full bench would be available from Wednesday till summer vacation that is scheduled to begin in May. The court said it would continue hearing the matter after reopening on June 13. The petitions challenged the constitutional validity of the Maharashtra State Reservation for Socially and Educationally Backward Classes Act, 2024, under which 10 per cent reservation was granted to the Maratha community in government jobs and education. As per the petitioners, the Maratha community was not a backward community that requires benefits of reservation. It also claimed that Maharashtra has already crossed the 50 per cent cap on reservation.  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Uddhav Thackeray: 'Flaming torch' will reduce autocratic regime to ashes

Uddhav Thackeray, the leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), implied on Tuesday that the country's dictatorial administration will fall, symbolising his party's electoral symbol, the "flaming torch," as a subtle jab at the BJP-led central government, reported PTI.  According to the report, at a press conference that followed the publication of a promotional song that featured the party's election symbol, Thackeray declared that the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) parties, which are made up of the Congress, NCP, and Shiv Sena, will soon present a united manifesto. Although the Congress has already unveiled its manifesto, Thackeray stressed that the MVA's combined manifesto will have elements unique to Maharashtra, the report added.  हुकूमशाहीविरोधात धगधगणार ‘शिवसेनेची मशाल’! शिवसेना (उद्धव बाळासाहेब ठाकरे) अधिकृत प्रचार गीत. pic.twitter.com/BAQSy6BhFE — Shivsena UBT Communication (@ShivsenaUBTComm) April 16, 2024 "The flaming torch symbol has reached every nook and corner of Maharashtra. Uddhav Thackeray, on Monday, had countered Union Home Minister Amit Shah who had said that the BJP had not engineered a split in Shiv Sena and NCP rather the parties were split because of "Uddhav's love for his son (Aaditya Thackeray, an MLA) and Sharad Pawar's love for his daughter (Baramati MP Supriya Sule)". Speaking about it, Thackeray was quoted in the PTI report as saying, "Amit Shah should not forget that his party colleague Devendra Fadnavis had proudly claimed he came back to power by breaking two parties. Shah and his party leaders must at least maintain a common political line."

Mumbai court remands arrested accused to police custody till April 25

A Mumbai court has remanded the two people arrested in relation to the shooting incident outside the house of actor Salman Khan to police custody until April 25.  The two people who were caught are Bihar natives Vicky Gupta (age 24) and Sagar Pal (age 21). They were running from the police after the firing incident outside Salman Khan's house, reported PTI.  According to police sources, the people were captured late on Monday night after being on the run from Mata No Madh hamlet in Gujarat's Kutch area, the news agency report stated.  Per the report, after their arrest, the two suspects were brought back to Mumbai and presented before a magistrate court on Tuesday.  The Mumbai Crime Branch, which was in charge of the investigation, requested the accused's custody for 14 days, claiming that their questioning was necessary to learn more about the conspiracy and identify the person responsible for the firing, the agency report stated.  The court, however, granted police custody for nine days, extending till April 25, to facilitate further investigation. The police officials told PTI that the accused persons had surveilled the actor's apartment in Bandra thrice before the Salman Khan firing incident.  Two men on motorcycles opened fire outside Khan's apartment at the Galaxy Apartment in Bandra around 5 am on Sunday before fleeing. The accused in the Salman Khan house firing case boarded a train bound for Borivali but alighted at Santacruz railway station and walked out. The cops were also reviewing CCTV footage from the area which had captured the two accused persons, earlier reports stated.  According to the PTI report, the police interrogated three people from Navi Mumbai on Monday, including the house owner where the accused stayed, the previous owner of the two-wheeler used in the crime, the agent who facilitated the sale, and several others, as part of the investigation into the Sunday firing.

Shahu Chhatrapati says debuting with Congress was 'natural' choice

Shahu Chhatrapati, a descendant of the Kolhapur royal family, has announced his political debut with the Congress ahead of Lok Sabha Elections 2024, drawing inspiration from his beloved great-grandfather, Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, who is noted for his significant social reforms. In an interview with PTI ahead of Lok Sabha Elections 2024, Chhatrapati emphasised the need to preserve democracy and protect the Constitution in the face of perceived threats. Chhatrapati told PTI, "It is the oldest political outfit in the country and a pan-India party, associated with the Independence movement. We have to retain democracy in India, which everyone feels is in danger. The Constitution needs to be protected." Chhatrapati expressed concern about the delay in local body elections and emphasised the importance of safeguarding democracy and constitutional values. He emphasised that democracy is the cornerstone of society and must be protected at all costs, the PTI report stated.  "What if something goes wrong? We have to protect democracy and the Constitution. It is of paramount importance. Democracy has to be safeguarded and that is the base of everything," he told the news agency.  Reportedly, Chhatrapati reflecting on his family's heritage, said that Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj has made enormous contributions to inclusive development and social equality. He pledged to continue his grandfather's struggle against injustice and dedication to public welfare. "My great-grandfather was an illustrious social reformer and stood for all-inclusive development. He never encouraged polarisation of people. He worked for socio-economic upliftment and I take inspiration from him," Shahu Chhatrapati said. Chhatrapati defended the Congress's involvement in India's decades-long progress, denying the BJP's assertions. He emphasised the Congress' accomplishments in a variety of areas, including economic growth and nuclear energy development, the PTI report stated.  Regarding his campaign for Lok Sabha Elections 2024, Chhatrapati thanked the people of Kolhapur for their support, highlighting his family's active involvement in defining campaign responsibilities. He emphasised the importance of the Congress manifesto, which promises welfare for all strata of society. Chhatrapati refused to engage with recent remarks made by sitting MP Sanjay Mandlik, instead focusing on his campaign aims and the well-being of Kolhapur constituency, the report added.  The Lok Sabha Elections 2024 in Maharashtra will take place in five phases from April 19 to May 20, with polling in the Kolhapur parliamentary constituency set for May 7.

People trust PM Modi's vision for India's development, says Sena MP Mandlik

Shiv Sena Lok Sabha member from Kolhapur, Sanjay Mandlik expressed faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for India's development, claiming that the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 are a battle of two ideas. Mandlik, who is seeking a second term, emphasised the importance of public faith in Modi's leadership. In an interview with PTI, Mandlik addressed his opponent, Shahu Chhatrapati, a scion of the Kolhapur royal family running on the Congress platform, claiming that voters in Kolhapur prioritise their personal well-being over a candidate's stature. Mandlik lauded Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's development measures, adding that voters had witnessed Shinde's dedication to the state's progress during the last two years, the PTI report added.  "This is a battle of two ideologies and visions. People trust the vision of PM Modi to make India a developed nation. In the Congress rule, we were a developing country and progress was slow," Mandlik told PTI.  Mandlik, further in the interview with the news agency, described the race for Lok Sabha Elections 2024 as a battle of ideologies, emphasising Modi's revolutionary agenda as opposed to the gradual progress under Congress's leadership. He acknowledged Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj's long-standing legacy of social equality and fairness in the Kolhapur community. "People here do not see who is contesting, but think about themselves and what is good for them. The idea of social equality and justice sowed by Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj remains within every Kolhapurkar. That is never going to change," he said. Despite experiencing initial criticism after switching allegiance to Shinde's Shiv Sena, Mandlik praised Shinde's dedication to Kolhapur's development, including measures to clean the polluted Panchganga river and win funds for flood protection projects, the report added. "When I switched to Eknath Shinde's side, I did face opposition from my voters. But in the last two years, they have seen how CM Shinde has worked for the development of the state," Mandlik told the news agency.  Mandlik further discussed his Lok Sabha Elections 2024 campaign approach, including ongoing discussions and preparations for door-to-door canvassing following the filing his nomination. He recalled his decisive victory in the 2019 elections over Dhananjay Mahadik of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). The Kolhapur Lok Sabha constituency, a traditional Congress bastion, has seen a shifting political landscape throughout the years. Sadashiv Mandlik, Mandlik's father, represented the constituency from 1999 to 2009, and various parties have held assembly divisions within it. Voting for Lok Sabha Elections 2024 in Kolhapur constituency is set for May 7, as part of Maharashtra's phased polling from April 19 to May 20.
