“This form of cannabis is often smuggled into India due to its premium quality and is typically sold at exorbitant prices in urban black markets,” said an officer attached to the Crime Branch.
According to a senior officer, they received intelligence on Thursday, alerting them that certain individuals were in possession of a large quantity of imported hydroponic weed and were planning to distribute it across Mumbai.
“Accordingly, we laid a trap at the crime spot and apprehended three accused. They were found in possession of a total of 4.57 kilograms of American hydroponic weed worth Rs 4,05,70,000. Through interrogation, it was revealed that they were planning to sell this weed in the city and the nearby vicinity. We have seized the hydroponic weed with a proper panchnama,” said another Crime Branch officer.
“We also seized Rs 38,000 in cash and five mobile phones worth Rs 3,50,000 from them, and they were also taken into custody for further course of investigation,” said the officer.
A case has been registered under Sections 8(c), 20(b), and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the Andheri Police Station.
After undergoing medical examination, all three accused were produced before the court on Friday and are now in police remand. Police said that further investigation is underway to trace the supply chain and other possible links to this high-grade drug syndicate.
