Five residents, including a two-year-old child, were safely rescued after being trapped in an elevator at a highrise residential building in Thane early Thursday morning.
The incident occurred at the 38-storey Vairat Building, part of the Vaikunth Pyramid Society in Balkum, Thane (West).
According to the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), the malfunction was reported around 12:50 AM by the Balkum Fire Station. A technical fault had caused the lift to stall on the third floor, trapping five individuals inside.
Fire brigade personnel responded promptly with an emergency vehicle and launched a rescue operation. After approximately 25 minutes of effort, all five individuals were safely evacuated. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The rescued residents were identified as Vikas Sabu (40), Renu Vikas Sabu (37), their 2-year-old daughter, Mallika Jain (24), and Sangeeta (32).
Authorities are investigating the cause of the technical malfunction.

The falling structure struck three parked vehicles: a Maruti Suzuki WagonR (MH 04 LQ 8980) owned by Budharam Yadav, which suffered damage to its windows; a Maruti Suzuki S-Presso (MH 01 DR 5155), whose owner has yet to be identified, which sustained minor damage; and an auto-rickshaw (MH 04 JH 7625), also with an unknown owner, which was damaged as well.
The RDMC team responded promptly with a pickup vehicle, assessed the situation, and cordoned off the area with barricades to ensure public safety.
Debris from the wall was scattered across the road, temporarily obstructing traffic. RDMC personnel quickly cleared the rubble, allowing the road to be reopened for vehicular movement.
According to a company supervisor, the remaining debris from the collapsed wall will be lifted and removed shortly.
