The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) between May 20 and 24. In its latest weather forecast, IMD has stated that MMR is likely to experience thunderstorms, followed by lightning and moderate rainfall along with gusty winds at a speed of 40 to 50 km/hr in isolated regions.

According to IMD, a cyclonic circulation is likely to form over the Arabian Sea off the Karnataka coast around May 21. Shubhangi Bhute from IMD Mumbai said the system could impact weather across Maharashtra, particularly in South Konkan and Mumbai, between May 21 and 24. Heavy rain, stormy conditions and gusty winds are expected during this period. Residents and commuters are advised to follow official weather updates and take necessary precautions.

A low-pressure area is likely to form over the east-central Arabian Sea near Karnataka coast around Thursday. As a result, the rainfall activity across Maharashtra is expected to increase between May 19 and 25, particularly affecting Konkan and the ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra. The IMD has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places, with extremely heavy rainfall expected in parts of South Konkan on May 21.

Thunderstorm activity may also include cloud-to-ground lightning and strong gusty winds, posing potential threats to weak trees, structures, power lines, and crops. Minor damages to kutcha houses, huts, and agricultural assets are possible.

Residents are advised to:

  • Avoid staying in open areas during thunderstorms.
  • Refrain from taking shelter under tall trees or structures.
  • Unplug electrical appliances during lightning activity.
  • Stay away from water bodies and conductors of electricity.

Farmers are urged to:

  • Harvest matured crops early and store them safely.
  • Provide support to young plants to prevent damage from winds.
  • Avoid irrigation and chemical spraying during this period.
  • Drain excess water from fields and protect stored grains.
  • Keep cattle indoors and ensure their shelters are secure.

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon continues to advance over the southern Arabian Sea and parts of the Bay of Bengal, with further progress expected over the next few days. The evolving weather system, along with monsoonal advancement, signals the onset of an active rainy phase for Maharashtra.
