Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday urged the fishermen to stay alert sighting Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) rough weather warning for the next four days.

In a post on X, CM Fadnavis wrote, "The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of a possible low-pressure area forming over the east-central Arabian Sea near the Maharashtra and Goa coasts starting 21 May. It may intensify and move northward by 24 May, leading to rough sea conditions, especially near the western coastline."

He stated that while it is not expected to directly threaten the Maharashtra coast, strong winds and rough seas are likely to impact areas near Raigad, Ratnagiri, Mumbai, and Palghar districts in Maharashtra between May 22 and May 24.

The Disaster Management Department has issued an alert urging fishermen to avoid deep-sea fishing during this period and take all necessary safety precautions, he wrote further.

CM Fadnavis also shared an advisory for fishermen which says-

- Check regular weather updates from IMD and local authorities.

- Follow instructions from local administration and fishermen’s cooperatives.

- Avoid venturing into deep sea.

- Refrain from using small boats; operate only near the shore if essential.

- Keep safety gear like life jackets and wireless communication devices on hand.

- Shift boats and equipment to safe locations to avoid damage from high waves and wind.

- Prioritise safety and avoid fishing during rough sea conditions.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) between May 20 and 24. In its weather forecast, IMD has stated that MMR is likely to experience thunderstorms, followed by lightning and moderate rainfall along with gusty winds in isolated regions.

A low-pressure area is likely to form over the east-central Arabian Sea near Karnataka coast around Thursday. As a result, the rainfall activity across Maharashtra is expected to increase between May 19 and 25, particularly affecting Konkan and the ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra. The IMD has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places, with extremely heavy rainfall expected in parts of South Konkan on May 21.

Shubhangi Bhute from IMD Mumbai said, "It could impact weather across Maharashtra, particularly in South Konkan and Mumbai, between May 21 and 24. Heavy rain, stormy conditions and gusty winds are expected during this period. Residents and commuters are advised to follow official weather updates and take necessary precautions."
