Rains were likely to hit Pune, Satara, Sindhudurg and some other parts of Maharashtra on Friday evening, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a weather alert issued on May 23.
In nowcast warning issued at 4:45 pm on Friday, the IMD Mumbai said, "Moderate spells of rain very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Pune, Ahilyanagar, Satara, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Ratnagiri during next 3-4 hours."
In a similar alert for Maharashtra rains, the weather department said, "Moderate to Intense spells of rain very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Sindhudurg during next 3-4 hours."
The IMD on May 23 issued a 'yellow alert' for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar districts in Maharashtra and an 'orange alert' was issued for Pune, Ahilyanagar, Ghats of Satara, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli, predicting thunderstorm accompanied with lightning, heavy rainfall and gusty winds at isolated places.
A red alert was issued for Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts in Maharashtra.
The IMD said, "Heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places were very likely on Friday."
According to the weather department, a low-pressure system over east-central Arabian Sea off the coast of south Konkan and Goa.
It is likely to intensify and bring intense showers across Konkan and other parts of Maharashtra, the IMD has predicted.
IMD Mumbai officials had earlier stated that rainfall intensity in Mumbai and nearby regions, including south Konkan and south-central Maharashtra, is expected to increase between May 21 and 24.
According to IMD, “Currently, the well-marked low-pressure area over east central Arabian Sea off South Konkan-Goa coasts is in a moderately favourable environment with low to moderate vertical wind shear, poleward outflow, and warm sea conditions. Further prevalence of equatorial waves including Rossby wave and Kelvin wave with strong westerly wind anomaly over south Arabian Sea (5 to 7 mps) and easterly wind anomaly over east central Arabian Sea (5 to 7 mps) is supportive for maintenance of intensity of the system. However, land interactions are slowing down the development of the system. Compared to previous runs, latest model guidance has withdrawn likely development of depression over the AS and indicated nearly north eastwards movement. The system is under continuous watch for further development. The potential for development of depression during next 24 hours is thus maintained as moderate.”
