A 40-year-old builder had a miraculous escape on Tuesday night, after a bullet shot at him hit his mobile phone instead. Cops said that had the phone not taken the hit, the man could have died since the bullet was fired at him from very close range.

Dombivli resident Kamal Yadav had gone for drinks along with a local chemist and a builder, at the Gurukrupa Restaurant and Bar on Kalyan-Shil road in Dombivli (east). “After having a few drinks, Yadav went to the washroom. Since the bar has a single washroom, it was quite crowded. In the rush, Yadav collided with one Jeetendra Mhatre,” said Sanjay Jadhav, deputy commissioner of police, Kalyan division.

After this, Yadav apologised to Mhatre and left the bar. But when he was on his way out around 12.30 am, Mhatre and four others followed him, and got in a heated argument outside the bar once again. Jadhav added, “Following the argument, Mhatre removed his licensed pistol and started firing at Yadav. But, Mhatre was so drunk, he was unable to hit his target. Later, he pointed his pistol towards Yadav’s left thigh and fired a bullet. After realising that Yadav was hit, the four fled the spot.” The mobile phone was in Yadav’s left trouser pocket.
Reduced impact
“My father’s mobile phone saved him and reduced the impact of the bullet,” said Kundan, Yadav’s son. He added, “We have admitted him to AIMS Hospital in Dombivli as gunpowder had entered his body. But, doctors have told us that the bullet’s speed and force was largely diminished due to the mobile phone taking the hit. The bullet could only create a small injury, even though it was fired from very close range. My father had purchased the phone just last month.”
Accused arrested
The cops have arrested the accused, Jeetendra Mhatre, who is also a Dombivli-based builder. He told them that he does not remember much of the incident since he was drunk. He was produced in a local court yesterday, and has been remanded to police custody till December 18.
