Yesterday, as Mumbai honoured the heroes of the 26/11 terror attack, Virar residents came together to pay homage to four heroes who stood tall on their four legs against all threats. Canine cops Caesar, Sultan, Max and Tiger saved the lives of hundreds, not just during the 26/11 attacks, but also after the 2006 Mumbai train blasts and the 2011 triple blasts (see box).

Several locals gathered to pay tribute to the dog detectives at Fizza Shah's farm, where the dogs had been living post retirement, before passing away last year. Among those who mourned the fallen hero hounds were other retired police dogs who live at the farmhouse.

"We have made a samadhi for these four dogs, and hundreds gathered today to offer flowers and prayers, and to plant trees and feed the poor in their memory," Fizza told mid-day.
